Wiring project page Attending: John Horan, Tony DiTullio, Gary Collins, Doug Brown, Brenda Bennett, Garnet Barrigar, Carmen Casolara, Bob Jewett, Dave Brouwer Last meeting: 3/5/96 Next meeting: 4/5/96 Agenda: 10:30-11:30am - Electronics issues (Justin) ------------- a. review recent proposals by Annixter and Cisco b. discuss contacting other campuses about their satisfaction w/ vendors c. define our strategy for handling the electronics project (go w/ single; vendor (DEC); go w/ other state contract; go w/ RFP) 11:30-12:00 - Residence Life issues with contractors on campus ----------- (John Horan/Gary Collins) a. where will contractors reside? (one place? move as the project moves?) b. conditions for living in residence halls (lifestyle issues) c. custodial issues/concerns 12:00-12:30? - Residence Life issues with student assistants paid for by ------------ Res Life (Doug) a. Residential Computer Coordinator positions; free room? b. current Res. Hall Student Center positions; still needed next year? --------------------------------------------- 1. Electronics Design issues --------------------------------------------- a. Review proposals by Annixter and Cisco. Justin met with both vendors and each have submitted suggested proposals for building our residential network electronics as we we want (switched segments in every IDF; ATM backbone technology). b. Discuss contacting other campuses about their satisfaction with vendors we are looking at. c. Defining our strategy for handling the electronics project; that is: Given the timeline we are on, we agreed that we do not want to pursue an RFP. All of the vendors we are interested in are on state contract [Bay Networks, Cisco, DEC, Cabletron, 3Com]. If sufficient fiber is installed from the BDFs to the IDFs, then we will have the flexibility to implement a variety of electronics strategies, regardless of the vendor. Carmen feels that we will be able to get the extra fiber at the same cost of DEC's initial quote because of cost savings from other aspects of the project that have been changed. The benefits of going with a single vendor for the entire project include a single point of contact for problems, regardless of the source of the problem on the residential network (i.e., the wiring or the electronics). There may be some cost savings as well as a reduction of work on our part to coordinate with two separate vendors and install the electronics. Bob will contact Bill Todd (DEC) to see if he can work with any of vendors (above) and to determine what value he will bring to the electronics portion of the project if DEC manages it. [NOTE: contacted Bill and he can work with each of the vendors. He has been contacting them already to determine what discount relation- ship he can get with them. He believes he can deliver the entire project to us at the same cost we would find even if we work directly with an electronics vendor and installed it ourselves.] We may want to conduct another conference call with the Gartner Group to get their opinion on the vendors' backbone technology proposals. --------------------------------------------- 2. Residence Life issues with contractors on campus --------------------------------------------- a. The contractors quote is based upon housing their crew (8 or less) on our campus. John Horan agreed to providing housing to the crew on the basis of the following: - there is no housing before May 20th or after August 9th. - 2 men will be assigned to each room provided (a suite would be the ideal solution as it would also provide the crew with an area to use as their on-site office. - it may be necessary to move the crews to different housing arrangements over the course of the project. - crews must not interfere, nor disrupt, summer program guests and visitors. Any problems with the crew's behavior will be handled by Carmen and the vendor's project manager (likely to be Bill Todd from DEC). b. The contractor would like to install fiber and work in the wiring closets prior to May 20th. John indicated that that is not a problem as long as they do not start work before 9am. Also, there will be no housing available before May 20th. John stressed that no drilling (noise) or visible work (to students) be don from 6pm on 5/10/90 through commencement. Students need this time to prepare for, and take, their final examinations. c. Custodial issues/concerns Some of the designated wiring closets (IDFs) will conflict with trash and recycling storage, especially within the Bowman Hi-Rise. A temporary solution for now will be to put trash from the 3rd and 6th floors in the unused study rooms next to these IDFs. Jerry Beaulieu will be asked to begin work on the IDFs for Bowman 3rd and 6th floors immediately. John wants to look at the Bowman West (rm 116) before any work is done in that area. d. Other. The following buidling areas may be taken "off-line" by Residence Life next year (96-97): - Draime extension - Lehman House 1 and 2 - Bowman East ground floor - Bowman Southwest Hi-Rise 2nd floor --------------------------------------------- 3. Residence Life issues with student assistants paid for by Res Life --------------------------------------------- a. Residential Computer Coordinator (RCC) positions Waiving a room fee is valued at $3000. We are currently using the national rule-of-thumb for the RCC position; that is, one RCC can handle 50 student users. RAs currently get a bed waiver and a food stipend. Mentors get a 1/2-bed waiver. We will continue to look at how to compensate RCCs for next year. A special project team is looking at all student policies, services and support. Doug Brown is heading up that project team. b. Current Residence Hall Student Center positions John asked if these positions would be needed if the RCCs are hired. We will continue to look at this question as well.
