---------------------------------------------
1. Review project issues to date
---------------------------------------------

a. IDF (Wiring closet) list and needs
    ----------------------------------
Carm distributed his list of wiring closets (IDFs or SERs) that will be used
in the 5 residence halls for this project. He will submit this list as a
work order to Jerry Beaulieu. Bowman rms. #3083 and #6083, as well as
Lehman rm# 13 will need to be done *very* soon. We will also need to
relocate the sink and stove in Knowles S307.

b. Location of wiring tray in Knowles hi-rise student rooms
   --------------------------------------------------------

Bob, Garnet and Carm met with John Horan to determine where a wiring "tray"
will be mounted on the ceiling of student rooms on the 3rd floor of the
   Knowles Hi-Rise.

It was agreed that we will have the trays mounted as far back towards the
window wall as possible. This will mean that the sink and stove in Knowles
   S307 (see 1a above).

c. Where project is to date:
   ------------------------
The contractors want to start this project as soon as the contract is
signed. The official start date will be 5/20 and the completion date
   is expected to be 8/8.

We are working on establishing separate T1 access for the students to use
from their rooms once wired. This will ensure that our existing network
services (Internet/SUNYNet access) will not be impacted once student rooms
   come "on-line".

A new development/opportunity has emerged. We are exploring the possibility
of partnering with Potsdam Central Schools (PCS) to share the cost of
providing Internet access to student rooms (as described above) and to the
PCS. This arrangement will save both institutions money and will work out
well since PCS will use the Internet primarily during the day and the
students will be using it primarily in the evening.

We met with Russ Nelson (our Unix consultant) and feel we can establish
separate TCP/IP-host services (email, DNS, bootp, etc.) for the residential
network. Again, this is needed to ensure that network services on our
existing campus network do not suffer from performance problems once student
   rooms are wired.

Student support issues and policies: A new team, led by Doug Brown, has been
established to investigate issues surrounding student use of the network from
their rooms as well as the support needs. This group is working with Chris
Strong and Residence Life to develop any new policies that might be needed
and are developing job descriptions for Student Residential Technology
Consultants who will provide direct support to students in the residence
halls. A request to hire a Residential Computing Supervisor will also be
   submitted.

---------------------------------------------
2. Review Digital's (Bill Todd) wiring quote
---------------------------------------------

We reviewed the quote. There are some minor changes to be made, but
essentially the quote is acceptable. When funding has been secured, we
will move forward with acceptance of the quote. Mike suggested that he
should be the signatory.

We looked at the additional two (2) line items of the quote we requested:

  - wiring 75 doors with a cable that could be used in the future with a
    card-entry system

  - pulling additional wire and fiber from Raymond to Kellas

At this point, we will probably *not* accept either line item because of
their cost. Tony pointed out that a separate project may be submitted in
the future for providing card access to residence building doors and that
would cover the cost of the wiring.

Garnet will look into the cost of pulling cable/fiber from Raymond to
Kellas since we may be able to do the job much less expensively by hiring
a local contractor.

Please give me (Bob Jewett, x2699) a call if you want to know the details
about the cost of this project.
