Agenda:

  1. PACES/SUNYCard preparations
  2. Other project concerns/issues
  3. Around the table (comments)
  4. Electronics Design meeting (NST Project Team only)

---------------------------------------------
1. PACES/SUNYCard preparations
---------------------------------------------

a. Priority concerns at this point for PACES/SUNYCard are:
    ------------------------------------------------------
      - College Union (2 readers for snackbar)
      - Bear's Den (1 reader)
      - "PM Shop"/Cookies&Cream (2 readers)
      - Bookstore (4 to 5 readers/register)
      - Lehman Dining Hall (2 readers in 4 possible locations; see below)
      - Crane Commons snackbar (2 readers)
      - Greenery (1 reader)
      - Thatcher Gallery (1 reader)

    Non-priority:
    ------------
      - Maxcy concession area (1 reader)
      - Maxcy facilities locations (5 readers)
      - washing machine/vending areas in residence halls (should have
some "pilot" areas to test this service during the Fall '96
semester; all areas should be ready for Spring '97)

b. Lehman Dining Hall
    ------------------
      - PACES indicated that they need two (2) faceplates (data) at
the top of the stairs and possibly 2-3 locations within the
dining hall. The four (4) existing locations (included in the
        count above)

c. College Union (New) Bookstore
    -----------------------------
     - Very tenative plans here. Since our meeting there have been
more developments which suggest that the new Bookstore will not
be placed on the 2nd floor of the MPR. However, if the Bookstore
does move, there are 8 data/phone faceplates needed to serve the
staff and 6 - 12 connections for registers (readers) during the
       peak periods for purchasing books.

     - The Bookstore is developing a Computer/Technology Center which
       will need a network connection.

c. The Greenery
    ------------
     - There is a need for 2 readers in this area (2 data jacks).

d. Crane Dining Area
    -----------------
     - There is a need for 2 readers in this area where they are
currently located. Jim Stoltie should be contacted about
       additional needs for readers.

e. Knowles MPR
    -----------
     - The details for this space are also in flux, but Bill Fisher has
suggested we plan for it anyway. Joe Sarnoff is the chair of
the Knowles MRP Usage Committee. What is desired is maxium
flexibility to add services (data/phone) to this space.

f. Maxcy Hall
    ----------
     - Bob contacted Neil Johnson and Bill Donohue about their need
for readers. Neil will get back with the location of the current
readers. PACES will not be coordinating the installation and use
       of readers for Maxcy.

---------------------------------------------
2. Other project concerns/issues
---------------------------------------------

a. Should we replace the electronics of our existing network to improve
manageability and to keep our electronics consistent between the 2
    networks?

b. IP addressing strategy for student faceplates

c. Security/Student Conduct/Guidelines

d. There was discussion about whether we should provide separate host
services for our residential network to keep access/performance
separate as possible from our existing network. This would require
a separate server for mail, news, bootp, DNS. We will look at this
as we design the residential network and consult with Russ Nelson.

e. A suggestion from Doug Brown:

...when visiting other campuses, I've seen some nice billboard size
signs of the "Wiring for the Future" type which helped to explain
the mess and announce the scope of the project...something to consider
having the contractor do (similar to housing projects where they
detail the designers, the vendors, and the sponsoring funding.

---------------------------------------------
3. Around the table (comments)
---------------------------------------------

Dan Hayes wondered what the College Union or SGA might want for readers to meet their needs. This is something to discuss with them.

---------------------------------------------
4. Electronics Design meeting (NST Project Team only)
---------------------------------------------

a. Wiring closet (SER/IDF) to campus network electronics
    -----------------------------------------------------
Justin distributed a table outlining the cost of a preliminary design
which places a DEC 900TM 32-port hub in each of 29 wiring closets
    (SERs/IDFs).

Since there will be some closets in which SUNYCard readers will share
network segments with student rooms, it will be important that the
900TM hub prevent eavesdropping (packet-sniffing) to protect SUNYCard
transactions. Justin will check on this feature of the 900TM to
determine if it will meet our security needs.

Justin's design provides 960 active ports and will use an FDDI ring
to connect the residence halls to the current campus network.

b. We will try to meet with Russ Nelson to discuss the feasibilty and
the method for providing separate Unix host services (DNS, bootp,
email server, etc.) and a separate Internet gateway for the residence
network. If possible, we will try to meet with Russ during the week
    of 3/18.

c. Justin will send 3Com and Cisco the same information we have sent to
    Cabletron and DEC.
