Notes from 1st conference call to Gartner Group: 1. Cat5 UTP - 155Mbs ATM will work on standard Cat5 - 7 to 12 year lifespan - cabling is 35-50% of cost to the faceplate; labor is 60%, but overbudget for the cable - fiber will cost 35-50% more than plenum Cat5 - "Cat6" is just IBM marketing and we should not consider it; it is not a standard. 2. Go for a single vendor from end-to-end (closet to faceplate). You should get a 15-year warranty with a national installer. 3. Test/certify installation per "TSB67" specification. 4. Testing end-to-end per "channel link test" 5. Usual cost per faceplate (cable end-to-end): Cat5 - $215 Cat3 - $170-190 6. 3Com is the undisputed leader for Ethernet Hubs/NICs 7. Go with FDDI for backbone connections between hubs; 100BaseT is not appropriate for backbone segments
