Wiring project page Attending: Garnet Barrigar, Dave Brouwer, Carmen Casolara, Bob Jewett, Justin Sipher Last meeting: 2/21/96 Next meeting: 3/5/96 Agenda: 1. Review summer building schedules 2. PACES/SUNYCard preparations 3. Designing our network electronics 4. Other project concerns/issues 5. Around the table (comments) --------------------------------------------- 1. Review summer building schedules. --------------------------------------------- a. Knowles MPR ----------- We have been told that the renovation project for this area is scheduled to start 4/1 and be completed by 7/1. That means we will need to know what network (data/phone) services are needed in this area and where they will be located so that if conduit needs to be placed in walls, it can be included as part of that project. (see details below under 2.e.) b. Maintenance/Cleaning Schedules ------------------------------ Bob contacted Gary Collins and sent him copies of the project meeting minutes for him to review. Gary asked to be notified when we are more definite about the building schedules. He would like to continue receiving copies of the minutes (he has no email). --------------------------------------------- 2. PACES/SUNYCard preparations --------------------------------------------- a. Bob met with the PACES SUNYCard project team and identified their primary concerns at this point. Dining Hall card readers must be operational when the Fall semester starts: - 5 readers in College Union - 2 readers in Crane complex - 2 readers in the Lehman Dining Hall - 1 reader in the Greenry - 1 reader in the Gallery (Thatcher) The new bookstore (old college MPR) and its offices will need data access and will have card readers Maxcy Hall will have card readers too, but PACES will not be responsible for them. The network infrastructure needed to provide service to each are identified is desribed below: b. Lehman Dining Hall ------------------ The wiring closet (SER/IDF) that will serve Lehman will need the following minimal equipment: - Fiber Optic Transceiver (approx. $350) - Depending upon the type of reader equipment, either a 10BaseT hublet (smallest configuration possible) or a RS232 terminal server will be needed. c. College Union (New) Bookstore ----------------------------- It will be necessary to install conduit from the wiring closet (SER/IDF) that will serve this area to a designated area of the Bookstore. The location will have to identified after the design of the Bookstore is known. It may be necessary to install conduit to each space in the new Bookstore that will have data/phone and to each space that has a card reader. The wiring closet (SER/IDF) that will serve this area will need the following minimal equipment: - Fiber Optic Transceiver (approx. $350) - Depending upon the type of reader equipment, either a 10BaseT hub (8 ports or greater depending upon the number of data connections needed in the Booksore) and a RS232 terminal server will be needed. c. The Greenery ------------ Two faceplates will need to be installed for each cash register (card reader). Cable to these plates will be pulled from the existing SER/IDF in Carson 105. Depending upon the type of reader equipment, either a DEMPR (existing multi-port thin wire repeater) or a RS232 terminal server will be needed in the SER/IDF. d. Crane Dining Area ----------------- A standard faceplate will need to be installed for each cash register (card reader). Cable to these plates will be pulled from the existing SER/IDF in the Crane complex. Depending upon the type of reader equipment, either a DEMPR (or DESTA) or a RS232 terminal server will be needed in the SER/IDF. e. Knowles MPR ----------- We will need a conduit from the location of the data/phone faceplate to the Knowles BDF (will use the BDF as our "wiring closet" for this area). An FOT and a hublet (smallest configuration possible) will be needed bring service to the faceplates. Peter Brouwer reported that Bill Fisher wants two (2) faceplates in the room. We should contact Joe Sarnoff to determine the desired location of these faceplates. f. Maxcy Hall ---------- Providing ethernet to the ticket office would not be a problem. If the new SUNYCard readers require RS232, then a terminal server would need to be installed in the closet serving the ticket office. Bringing ethernet or RS232 to the pool area will be *much* more involved. We will need to find out from Neil Johnson where the current readers are used and what is desired for the future. --------------------------------------------- 3. Designing our Electronics --------------------------------------------- a. After meeting with DEC to look at their electronics, the following equipment looks plausible: - Put a 32-port hub (DEC 900TM) in each of the designated SER/IDFs. There are currently 27 SER/IDFs being considered for the project. This would allow students to live in any building/room. - Consider using a 12-port switched fiber hub (DEC PortSwitch 900FP) in Stowell or in each residence building BDF. - Need to consider security for Res Life offices in these buildings and a way to segment traffic from PACES readers (vending, washing machines, dining areas). Without segmenting this traffic, it may be possible for individuals to "sniff" packets traveling from the reader to the PACES server. --------------------------------------------- 3. Other project concerns/issues --------------------------------------------- b. Other issues to be addressed by this team: - Should we replace the electronics of our existing network to improve manageability and to keep our electronics consistent between the 2 networks? - IP addressing strategy for student faceplates - Security/Student Conduct - There was discussion about whether we should provide separate host services for our residential network to keep access/performance as separate as possible from our existing network. This would require a separate server for mail, news, bootp, DNS. We will look at this as we design the residential network and consult with Russ Nelson. --------------------------------------------- 4. Around the table (comments) --------------------------------------------- a. A suggestion from Doug: ...when visiting other campuses, I've seen some nice billboard size signs of the "Wiring for the Future" type which helped to explain the mess and announce the scope of the project...something to consider having the contractor do (similar to housing projects where they detail the designers, the vendors, and the sponsoring funding.
