Wiring project page Attending: John Horan, Garnet Barrigar, Brenda Bennett, Dave Brouwer, Carmen Casolara, Bob Jewett, Justin Sipher Last meeting: 2/16/96 Next meeting: 3/1/96 Agenda: 1. Review DEC site visit questions with John Horan 2. Review summer housing schedule with John Horan 3. Around the table (comments) 4. Designing our Electronics --------------------------------------------- 1. Review DEC site visit questions with John Horan --------------------------------------------- Questions raised during DEC's site visit: a. Can 8"x8" access panels be cut in the ceilings of student closets? If so, do the cover plates have to meet any special specs (tamper-proof? fire-proof?) - John had no problem with proceeding with this strategy. b. Can we get one (1) room (a student room?) per building to store equipment? - No problem. c. Can a tractor trailer be parked in parking lot near buildings being wired? - Yes, but he stressed the need to keep things looking good for Alumni Weekend, especially, Lehman Hall where alumni will be housed. d. Will the contractors have any time restrictions on access to the buildings being wired? - John indicated that the contractors can work when they want unless it is near a space someone is currently living in. Traditional work hours for occuppied buildings is 9am - 5pm. Contractors must also consider the programs that are running in the buildings. e. Can the contractors house their crews in the residential buildings? - This could be negotiated. No housing would be available after 8/11/96. f. Wiremold vs. EMT for network cables in student rooms - appearance vs. cost - Bob called Bill Davis at Geneseo to find out why Geneseo went with EMT vs. Wiremold. Bill indicated that cost and ease of installation were the primary considerations. However, the cost savings were minimal (perhaps $20,000 for their $890,000 project. They were not concerned about appearance. "We do ugly.") John prefers Wiremold to EMT for appearance reasons, but would certainly go along with a decision to use EMT if cost savings or tampering were considered to be significant. --------------------------------------------- 2. Review summer housing schedule prepared by John Horan. --------------------------------------------- a. Lehman House 1 -2 ----------------- - John said these 2 houses are likely to be closed for the 96-97 school year and may be remodeled. However, we will wire these areas *as planned*. These areas should be wired at the very *end of the project*. b. Knowles North ------------- - The number of students indicated in John's schedule is an estimate. He can move these students to different sections of Knowles North as the project proceeds. c. Maintenance/Cleaning Schedules ------------------------------ - We should work with Tony DiTullio and Gary Collins on coordinating this. We should consider building preparations for programs scheduled for these buildings when we try to coordinate schedules. - We should consider a day or two before/after each session scheduled for the buildings (see John's schedule) because staff will arrive early and leave later than the program participants. --------------------------------------------- 3. Around the table (comments) --------------------------------------------- a. Should wiring be installed for doors into the residential buildings (approx. 72)? - John will need to know the cost of this before he can commit to it. A ballpark guess would be $200/door (approx. $14,000 total). b. Brenda pointed out that some offices in residence halls may be eliminated. Will those areas still need data and phone? - No. All office spaces will continue to be used as offices. c. Activating ports (faceplates) in student rooms (see "Designing our Electronics" below for more info) - John will be printing up a description of housing options for the 96-97 school year before 3/15/96. We need to give him as much information as possible on where a student will need to live to get network access. --------------------------------------------- 4. Designing our Electronics --------------------------------------------- a. Design Project Team - The key team members for designing our electronics will be Garnet Barrigar, Dave Brouwer, Carmen Casolara, Bob Jewett, Justin Sipher. b. Ports (faceplates) in public areas (e.g., lounges) - We should designate a "public" port on every hub used in the residential wiring project so that we can easily turn a "public port" on/off. This would help prevent tampering with a faceplate and network access that has not been authorized or activated. c. Host services for the residential network - There was discussion about whether we should provide separate host services for our residential network to keep access/performance as separate as possible from our existing network. This would require a separate server for mail, news, bootp, DNS. We will look at this as we design the residential network and consult with Russ Nelson. d. Reviewing responses to Cabletron's questions (Joel Daly) - We reviewed our response to each question. The response will be sent to everyone on the wiring project email list. "SUNY Potsdam's response to network design questions" e. Other issues to be addressed by this team: - Should we replace the electronics of our existing network to improve manageability and to keep our electronics consistent between the 2 networks? - IP addressing strategy for student faceplates - Security/Student Conduct - Knowles MPR data access - Lehman Dining Hall data access f. Next "Electronics Design" meeting will be held at 9am on 3/1 in Kellas 217.
