Wiring project page Attending: Peter Brouwer, Tony DiTullio, Garnet Barrigar, Brenda Bennett, Dave Brower, Carmen Casolara, Bob Jewett, Justin Sipher Last meeting: 1/31/96 Next meeting: 2/21/96 Agenda: 1. Review of DEC site visit 2. Review summer housing schedule 3. Other items 4. Designing our Electronics 5. Around the table (comments) --------------------------------------------- 1. Review of DEC site visit --------------------------------------------- A. DEC will submit a formal quotation on the of wiring project by mid-March (4 weeks) B. Questions raised during visit: (1). Do we have to use metal raceways in the hallways? Yes. We will go with metal raceways, particularly in Knowles 5th. (2). Can 8"x8" access panels be cut in the ceilings of student closets? If so, do the cover plates have to meet any special specs (tamper-proof? fire-proof?) Tony indicated that anything but wood should be acceptable, but we will need to inform him of the materials to be used prior to installation. What was suggested was white, sheet metal held in place with screws. In the hallways, a white thin metal plate held in place with screws through angle "iron" should be sufficient. Carm will contact Bill Todd and inform him of this. (3). Need to know how to wire Lehman "houses" - to be determined. (4). DEC has suggested using EMT "conduit" within student rooms to house cable to each faceplate vs. wiremold. They claim that Geneseo saved over $200,000 on their latest wiring project by using EMT. The consideration is appearance vs. cost. We will need to consult with John Horan on this issue. Bob will check with Geneseo to find out what the determining factors were in their decision to go with EMT. (5). Will the contractors be restricted to certain hours for working in the buildings? -- John Horan (6). Can the contractors have one room in each building for storage during the project? -- John Horan C. Should we all existing network access in the residence buildings to 10BaseT? Yes. We will replace all current 10Base2 (thin wire) with 10BaseT and the necessary electronics. This will affect some offices/rooms in the 5 residential buildings, as well as each of the student computing centers. D. Should we activate phones lines installed in Draime/Van Housen (dial tone)? Yes, our department will take the responsibility of activating dial tone on any new cabling that will be used for phone service. --------------------------------------------- 2. Review summer housing schedule --------------------------------------------- A. Reviewed summer housing schedule prepared by John Horan. We will need to know where residents will be located in Knowles North. Justin suggested putting the housing schedule on a calendar so that we can plan/coordinate schedule for effectively. B. Bob has written to Connie Zelinski, Bill Donahue and Neil Johnson to inform them about the project and to ask them to coordinate all summer residence hall plans with the project team. C. Possible Room Modifications for Handicap Students Tony mentioned that hew will be changing 6 or more rooms in Bowman South (Hi-Rise) to accomodate handicap students. The closets will be moved in the rooms. He will get back to the project team when more details are known about the number and the location of the rooms. D. Building Maintenance/Cleaning Schedule DEC has asked us to check on the residential building maintenance schedule so that cleaning is done *after* they are through installing cable. Tony suggested contacting Gary Collins and coordinating the schedules with him. --------------------------------------------- 3. Other items --------------------------------------------- A. Wiring Closet Renovations Reviewed Jerry Beaulieu's memo on prices for renovating rooms for new wiring closet locations. Tony asked that we coordinate with him on when these renovations will needed. Carm thinks there will only be a couple of rooms that will need to be worked on soon. The rest should wait until the cable installers are done so that they can move equipment into the rooms before wall, etc. are put in place. B. Parking We contact Public Safety to coordinate parking for the contractor. Tony indicated that there were no planned maintenance projects for the parking lots that would affect this project other than painting. We should contact Tony if the contractor does want to park a tractor-trailer near a building. We should coordinate with Jerry Beaulieu about workers parking their cars in the lots since painting will be going on. C. Drop Shipments Tony said that any drop shipments for the contractors should go directly to the site, *not* through Receiving. D. Wiring Janitor Offices Tony said that he met with Bill Fisher on this and they decided *not* to wire janitor offices for data. E. Keys It was suggested that we request a special key to a specific door to give the contractors access to a building they are working in. The contractor should be allowed to select the door they want to use. Discussion on how to get keys back from the contractors included withholding final payment until they were returned, or using a deposit. We should coordinate this with Jean Green. F. Doors to residential buildings John Horan should be involved in the decision about whether to pull wire to doors that may use a card reader in the future. G. PACES questions PACES will need to let us know if they want cable pulled to their areas in the Lehman Dining Hall. This facility would require the installation of a rack, a fiber interface (hub?) and data cabling. This would add substantially to the cost per faceplate passed on to PACES. We still need to pin down the exact number of vending areas and washing machines, etc. Bowman Commissary - We need to know if the *new* Bowman Commissary will need data and telephone services. That will be an added cost item. Knowles MPR - To add data access to this proposed facility, we will need to install a rack, a fiber interface (hub?) and data cabling. Peter suggested we prepare for this possibility, but that the decision to do it should wait until the plans for this facility are better known. G. Asbestos Tony has a book in his office that identifies the location of all asbestos within campus buildings. DEC will only subcontract with companies using asbestos-aware workers. H. Sisson 3rd Floor Residences It was agreed that this floor will *not* be part of this wiring project. --------------------------------------------- 4. Designing our Electronics --------------------------------------------- A. Key design/development project team will be Justin Sipher (lead), Garnet Barrigar, Dave Brouwer, Carmen Casolara and Bob Jewett. B. Cabletron sent a list of questions that should be addressed as we consider the design of the "electronics" (hubs, repeaters, routers, etc) for this project. The Design Team will use these and meet next week (2/21/96) to begin working on this part of the project. See SUNY Potsdam's response to network design questions. C. Other issues to be addressed include: - management capabilities - integration with our existing electronics (the fiber FB issue) - vendor reputation - scalability/expandability of vendor's products D. Current vendors being consider include: Cisco, 3Com, Cabletron, DEC Bay Networks (AT&T) E. Carm and Garnet stressed the need to get training on how to manage the electronics (hubs). --------------------------------------------- 5.
