Wiring project page Attending: Last meeting: 12/20/95 Next meeting: 2/16/96 --------------------------------------------------------------------- Attending: Tony DiTullio, Gerry Beaulieu, John Horan, Jerry Stacey, Jan Scott, Peter Brouwer, Brenda Bennett, Garnet Barrigar, Carmen Casolara, Bob Jewett, Justin Sipher --------------------------------------------------------------------- Agenda: 1. Definitions 2. Financing our project 3. Reviewing the final "faceplate" locations 4. Ceiling access panels 5. Wiring closets 6. Briefing on networking seminar 7. Around the table (comments) --------------------------------------------- 1. Definitions: --------------------------------------------- After we throughly confused ourselves as we attempted to reach an understanding about terms to use when talking with vendors (and ourselves), we defined "faceplate" as the *unit* of our project. A "faceplate" will be installed for every bed (per the designed capacity of each building) in our 5 major residence halls. A faceplate will have a data jack and a telephone jack. Gerry and Tony assured us that we can use the room #'s on the floor plans they distribute. Those #'s will not change. --------------------------------------------- 2. Financing our project --------------------------------------------- Jan Scott said that she and Mike will be evaluating the bids to finance our wiring project. The interest rate will be in the low 5% range. We should have funds from this by the end of March. --------------------------------------------- 3. Reviewing the final "faceplate" locations --------------------------------------------- When we ask for a vendor quotation on the cost of this project, we will ask them to supply an additional estimate for the following non-student items: PACES (wiring needs in residence halls; *not* terminated at either end) ----- a. pulling Cat5 cable from our wiring closets to 15 laundry rooms b. pulling Cat5 cable from our wiring closets to 19 vending areas c. pulling Cat5 cable from our wiring closets to areas currently served by wiring to Griffin equipment (primarily cash registers in the dining areas) d. a "faceplate" for the new Bowman commisary, Lehman and Knowles dining areas PHYSICAL PLANT -------------- a. a "faceplate" for each janitor office (12?) in the residence halls b. a "faceplate" for the new Knowles MPR c. pulling Cat5 cable from our wiring closets to each building entry door of the residence halls (est. 72) --------------------------------------------- 4. Ceiling access panels --------------------------------------------- We may need 3 access panels installed so vendors can look into the residential building ceilings to assess how cable could be pulled. Gerry asked that we send him the 3 locations we want a panel installed in and a completion date. Carm will determine where these panels should be installed and submit the work request. --------------------------------------------- 5. Wiring closets --------------------------------------------- Carm will create a master list of all wiring closet locations as known currently (we realize locations *may* change when the contractor begins the installation process). John Horan will review these locations and give final approval for any "closets" that will be placed in a current student room. John will need this list *before* mid-March because he will need to inform students about rooms that will no longer be available. (Housing assignments are to be completed by mid-April.) --------------------------------------------- 6. Briefing on networking seminar --------------------------------------------- Carm, Garnet and Justin attended a networking seminar at the SUNY Training Center yesterday (1/30/96). They pointed out the following items that were stressed in the seminar: - use a consultant for negotiating our contract with DEC if we use the CM224 contract with DEC. - we should have final approval of the selection of subcontractors - cabling/faceplates should all be labelled end-to-end --------------------------------------------- 7. Around the table (comments) --------------------------------------------- We should consider a "Clerk of the Works" (a site rep) who handles the nitty-gritty, day-to-day details and acts as the go-between with contractors (keys, questions, etc). It is not clear to us how much of this responsiblity might be provided by a Project Manager. A site rep might cost between $8K - 10K. We should alert contractors to areas where there is asbestos. Contractors should have performance bonding. We should *carefully* coordinate scheduling of work in buildings with John Horan because of campus summer programs. We will need a complete list of summer programs that will use the residence halls over the summer. We should record all questions that vendors raise on walk-throughs. We may find that answering these questions will help clarify issues. Electrical service in not adequate in any of the residential buildings and students may find that their computers won't work if they are using a number of other electrical devices. Lehman will be getting an upgrade this summer. We may need to get special permission to work in the Lehman House 1 apartments (single parent apartments). --------------------------------------------- 8. A preliminary look at "user" issues (Acceptable Use Policy; user-conduct issues, etc.) --------------------------------------------- Not addressed at this meeting. --------------------------------------------- 9. Other items: ---------------------------------------------
