1. Next meeting: Weds. 5/24 @ 8am 2. Old Business: - Shiva LANRover problems/update. No reported problems since our last meeting! Please report any problems using our x4000 data entry service. Carm reported that he has found severe noise in our trunk lines that randomly occurs. Could this be a source of the problems we have with unexpected modem disconnects? To be investigated... - Network Services WWW pages. Bob reported on the information he picked up at the UVM conference that he and Justin attended. Just click here [UVM notes] to get to the notes (which are now linked to our "Wiring the Residence Halls" page. - Network ADD estimate for Juliana Degone, Mental Health/Van Housen. Carm provided a parts and labor estimate: Mark Stoddard's faceplate ($98.93 for parts); Juliana's faceplate ($54.51 for parts); 16 hours labor ($320). They would also need to purchase a faceplate cable and a NIC (network interface card). There was discussion about whether we should have to provide an account for email if we provided network access to these tenants (or any tenants), especially if they elect to use a modem in lieu of direct network connectivity. Bob will check with Bill Fisher to determine what the contract under- standing is for tenants and network services. - x4000. Nothing entered via voice-mail over the past week. Does this mean we had no network problems to log and/or that we did not network ADDS/MOVES/CHANGES? - Flagg Classroom. Mike Nuwer was invited to attend our 5/24 meeting @ 9am. Brenda will check with him before she leaves for vacation to determine what his telephone needs/questions are for the Flagg facility. - Updating our Chipcom EMM management modules to ver 4.01. Nothing done to date on this. - 2 modem lines for the Carson office. Completed! - Wiring the "dorms" - Bowman South Hi-Rise. Bob reported on his latest discussions with John Horan. John cannot market the Bowman rooms this summer since assignments have already been made. That means that even though we might wire the rooms, students with computers would not necessarily occupy those rooms. Carm reported that S&L Electric will be installing fire alarms in the building this summer too and we would have to work around that schedule. If we cannot start by early July, we would not be able to finish up before the start of the fall semester. We decided to go ahead with the site visits by Cabletron and Chipcom. 3. New Business: - UVM conference report. Bob and Justin reported on information they picked up at the conference (mostly residential network concerns--see above) - Voice services. "Intuity" [tabled for future meeting] (Brenda) - SUNYNet weekend coverage. [tabled for future meeting](Bob) - Important goals for 95-96: [tabled for future meeting] - Discussed problem with a student (Eric Phillips) who posted a message soliciting commerical activity on public News groups. [NOTE: Eric's account was disabled and he came in to apologize. His account will be re-instated later this week.] - There will be a campus-wide power outage on Sat 6/3 and Sun 6/4. Justin will provide Brenda a list of offices with networked printers. Brenda will see that these offices are called on Friday to be sure they turn their printers OFF before they leave for the weekend. This will prevent the printers from moving to the "Ethernet Backbone" default zone. Brenda will also contact customers outside the academic quad to inform them that there will be NO telephone service during this outage (Res Life, Heating Plant, Public Safety?, Student Affairs) Dave will power down all Unix servers. - Checking phones in the residence halls. Brian has been checking phones and is finding significant problems (broken phones, faceplates, dial tone) in Bowman Hall. 4. What's Important to accomplish by next week? - Prepare for power outage on Sat/Sun 6/3-6/4. - Set-up site visit (again!) w/ Cabletron. - Anixter here FRIDAY 5/19 for site visit. 5. Continuation of discussion on our roles for network problems and how/when to alert campus of problems with network services: [tabled for future meeting] - when an after-hours alert requires our attention - backup role for Justin's role as coordinator for network service problems - Brenda's role as information clearinghouse and her backup. - how to program (record messages) for the HOTLINE (x2884) 6. AGENDA for next meeting: - backup for Dave Brouwer's responsibilities - review Anixter site visit notes - coverage set up for upcoming STC conference (Bob, Justin, Brenda, Karen, and possibly Dave, will be away)
