NST Meeting 9/27/95

Network Services Team (NST)

Meeting Minutes 9/27/95

1. Last meeting: 9/13/95 Next meeting: 10/11/95

2. Status Reports:

   - SPOTVB management (how to get there as quickly as possible)

       * Moving VMS email users to our Unix mail server.

Bob will get a list of VA/VB email users and we will use this
information to develop a plan of action.

Bob will draft an email message to be sent to all VA and VB email
users apprising them of the upcoming changes so they will
understand the urgency to switch from VMS mail to Internet-based
       email.

   - Network Control Room
Most Apple servers have been moved to this area. Still waiting
on the transceiver for the Ultrix box before moving the Unix
         boxes.

   - Switching hub - installed and operational.

   - Keeping team informed of Network Services projects pending/waiting.
Nothing new to inform team about, but everyone agreed that we
should continue with the same process; that is, Brenda sends
email message to the team notifying them of upcoming network
         requests.

   - 2Gb drive for Unix servers. Supposedly on the way to us.

   - Shiva LANRover status.
Bob will get the list of accounts and have someone look for
accounts of students/employees no longer on campus.

   - Channel 3 - Burly Bear Network (BBN) (Carm)
Up and operational on Channel 3.

   - Network bridge "programming" - done? (Carm)
         Not done yet.

   - Flagg Classroom update. (Dave)
We need to address printing services from Flagg to the Levitt
Center. Bob asked Doug and Dave to bring this up at the next
         Desktop Computing Team meeting.

   - AppleTalk routing recommendations - how are things working?
Did not address this. Check on 9/27/95.

   - Wiring the "dorms" project. The Technology Fee has been
approved and that means this project will move ahead.

   - Voice services plan. Bob and Brenda will
be meeting soon to begin long-range planning for voice-services.

   - Gibson Gallery network ADD request from Diana Cooper
and Dan Mills. Done and operational. Unfortunately, Diana's
Mac is a "Classic" and cannot be put on the network w/o a network
adapter box (DaynaPort). Bob will contact her to let her know.

   - . is in root's path on ns1 -- Fixed. (Dave)

   - Keith Compeau to attend team meeting to talk about Windows
         NT (10/11/95)

   - Kellas building security concerns Carm reports that
Dick Bitely's office has been left open. Carm and Justin will
talk to NCC Systems to get a quote for alarming the control
         room area.

   - Notification of scheduled building power outages
Bob talked to Tony DiTullio about being notified of outages.
Tony will notify us of any scheduled outages, including
individual buildings. We can also contact Tony when we need
to know about the duration of an outage (scheduled or not).

Carm will check w/ the Heating Plant to determine how we can be
notified of outages that occur after hours/weekends/holidays.

   - NYSERNet Gateway Pilot project (Justin)
         Nothing new here.

3. New items:

   - Justin raised concerns about losing AppleTalk Zones when power is
lost. Putting the FastPath on the UPS did not help this last time.
After some discussion, it was suggested that keeping the bridges
and network hubs on a UPS might help. This would require a UPS on
Raymond 5th, Stillman and the hub room in Raymond. There is already
a UPS for the Alpha box in Stillman and we may be able to put the
     fiber bridges on it.

Justin felt we should test our strategy with power outages to see
if the UPS's are really needed. (Good idea! See 10/11/95 minutes)

   - Van Housen has been wired and is now up and operational.

   - Purchasing another LanRover. Bob suggested purchasing a new LanRover
instead of replacing the existing one. This would give us an extra
     unit to use for faculty/staff.

Question of dial-in lines being available. After some discussion, we
identified x2590 as a possible line to be used since it does not
appear to be used now (was a public dial-in port). Brenda will
inactivate it and leave a voice-mail message on it for users to
contact us if they need this line. (NOTE: Despite being off now for
nearly 2 weeks, we have not received any calls!)

4. Planning

   - Important goals for 95-96:
       * IMAP email server before 9/1/95
       * Moving VMS email users to our Unix mail server.
       *  28.8 modems for LanRovers.
       * additional dial-in lines needed - how many?
       *  separating employee/student dial-in

   - Our roles for network problems and how/when to alert campus of problems with network services:

       * backup role for Justin's role and David's role.
       * Brenda's role as information clearinghouse and her backup.
