NST Meeting 9/13/95

Network Services Team (NST)

Meeting Minutes 9/13/95

1. Last meeting: 8/9/95 Next meeting: 9/27/95

2. Status Reports:

Review our status on NST start-up priorities:

to have been completed before start of school year

All tasks have been accomplished with the exception of the
         "baseline" of network activity

       to be completed in September

No work has been done on updating the 4D database. We are on
target to getting the other tasks completed (Network Control
         Room--see item below)

   - Network Control Room
Justin has moved tables into the room and is in the processing
of establishing the gopher and WWW servers there as well as an
AppleSearch server. The 4D and AppleShare servers may move over
         there soon.

Dave will move the Unix servers to this area as soon as the
         switching hub is operational.

   - Switching hub - status
Carm reports that the Fiber-10BaseT transceiver should be on
campus by Monday. Testing of the hub will take place using
Garnet's computer first before moving any network services
         to it.

Justin will check w/ SUNYNet about what is needed to switch
our Wellfleet router from AUI to 10BaseT

   - Keeping team informed of projects pending/waiting--how is
     this working?
Seems to be working. Brenda reported on one job pending now
(Ram Chugh moving from Raymond 6th to Raymond 3rd).

   - Credit for 2Gb drive returned. (Dave)
The 2Gb drive has been "repaired" and will be returned to us
         vs. the credit originally suggested.

   - Shiva LANRover status. (Justin)
LanRovers have been stable. Justin reports that we now have
403 dial-in accounts and that during the afternoon he has
noticed 15-16 of our 16 ports active.

Bob will get the list of accounts and have someone look for
accounts of students/employees no longer on campus.

   - Channel 3 - Burly Bear Network (BBN) (Carm)
Carm is close to having Chan. 3 operational. He will check
with Jan Scott about the BBN agreement which must be signed
before we can run BBN programming material.

   - Network bridge "programming" - done? (Carm)
Not done yet. Carm will work w/ Dave on this. Check status
of this at the next meeting (9/27/95).

   - Flagg Classroom update. (Dave)
IP subnetting is working. Justin reports that there appears
to be a problem when Flagg computers make an IP connection to
our gopher services. They seem to be holding onto the gopher
port they connect to even when they are now longer using gopher.
         Dave will check into this.

We need to address printing services from Flagg to the Levitt
Center. Bob asked Doug and Dave to bring this up at the next
         Desktop Computing Team meeting.

   - AppleTalk routing recommendations - how are things working?
Did not address this. Check on 9/27/95.

   - Wiring the "dorms" project. (Bob)
Bob mentioned that our survey results show that students want
network connections in their room and that they are willing to
pay for it. This project will move forward if the Technology
         Fee is established.

   - Voice services plan. (Bob/Brenda)
Bob and Brenda will be working on this soon in order to develop
a plan that outlines our direction for voice services. This is
needed so that our AT&T rep and others on campus understand
what is needed and what is important to our future plans.

3. New items:

   - Gibson Gallery network ADD request from Diana Cooper
Carm and Garnet have looked at the job (yesterday 9/12) and
will add the Gallery network ADD to the "Green" room ADD.

   - . is in root's path on ns1 (concern raised by Russ Nelson
Dave said he would take care of this as soon as possible.

   - SPOTVB management (how to get there as quickly as possible)

       * Moving VMS email users to our Unix mail server.

We have not made sufficient progress on migrating our VMS users
to Internet-based email. This will be important to do since
SPOTVA is slated to leave soon and VB is destined to be operated
       by students.

Bob will get a list of VA/VB email users and we will use this
information to develop a plan of action.

We still need to address the email needs of Janet Dudley-Eshbach
and Nancy Rehse (accessing email from 2 different locations).

Bob will draft an email message to be sent to all VA and VB email
users apprising them of the upcoming changes so they will
understand the urgency to switch from VMS mail to Internet-based
       email.

   - Keith Compeau to attend team meeting to talk about Windows NT
Keith will be invited to an upcoming NST meeting to discuss the
directions/needs of the library's automation projects.

   - Kellas building security concerns (Carm)
Carm would like to make the sub-basement door self-locking so that
it always requires a key for entry. Maintenance staff have been
leaving it open and that is where all our Kellas fiber enters.

Carm/Bob will check into a motion-detector system for the Network
Control Room where all of our servers are being clustered.

   - Notification of scheduled building power outages (e.g., 8/14 power
       outage in Maxcy)
We should ask Tony Ditullio to notify us of scheduled power outages
       anywhere they occur on campus.

   - NYSERNet Gateway Pilot project (Justin)
Potsdam and Oswego are the pilot test sites for this new routing
configuration. The result should lead to better Internet per-
formance. This may occur during the month of October.

   - Network traffic loads/performance - how do things look?
Carm reports that Channel 2 (administrative network activity) shows
a low error rate (good news!) of 1:70 errors

5. Planning

   - Important goals for 95-96:
       * IMAP email server before 9/1/95
       * Moving VMS email users to our Unix mail server.
       *  28.8 modems for LanRovers.
       * additional dial-in lines needed - how many?
       *  separating employee/student dial-in

   - Our roles for network problems and how/when to alert campus of problems with network services:

       * backup role for Justin's role and David's role.
       * Brenda's role as information clearinghouse and her backup.
