Attending: Bob, Brenda, Carm, Dave, Garnet, Justin
1. Old Business:
- Shiva LANRover problems/update. Seem to be working better. They still
need to be reset (power cycled) occassionally. (NOTE: We are still seeing
phantom AppleTalk zones, so we still have a defective/rogue router that
may be causing LanRover problems).
- Library CD-ROM server. No news. Dave will call Keith to check on
this project.
- TCP/IP Optimization. Bob, Justin, Dave met. Dave will check logfile to
see what news groups we reject from Buffalo.
Regarding legitimate posting to news groups (requiring users to identify
themselves before being able to post to groups):
* Our news server has password protection, but no one knows how to use
it.
* Clarkson controls their news use through interactive accounts.
* Russ says this is a common problem throughout the Internet.
- IPX over the LanRovers. Chris Chmura is the only person on campus using
this feature according to Dave.
- Pagers. The 3 pagers for Bob, Brenda and Dave have been ordered.
- Anixter Site Survey. Carm set up a visit for Tuesday 4/11 @ 10am.
- Network Services WWW page. Bob asked everyone to learn how to post
HTML documents to our *internal* WWW server. We will rely more and more
on this resource for posting minutes of meetings, documentation, tips,
news, announcements and other information as needed. The URL (for now)
is:
http://kel7650.potsdam.edu/dctm.html
2. New Business:
- Carm is on jury duty next week (4/3 - 4/7).
- Carm reported that the cost of Category 5 wire is close to the cost of
fiber. This may affect our planning for the residence hall wiring
project.
- AppleTalk Zone Project. Found that the Shiva NetModem/E was our rogue
router and we took it off the network. That seemed to eliminate most of
of zone problems. However, during the past week, we have seen other
phantom zones with strange characters in them. We replaced Crumb
Library's Reference Office router with System 7.5 software that allows
them to print to a LocalTalk laser printer from their ethernet
connections.
- Access to rooms in Kellas by Student Assistants. Bob raised the issue of
what concerns/problems team members had with student assistant use of
Kellas rooms downstairs. After much discussion, the following guidelines
were established:
* Student Assts. should NOT change the settings of ANY telephone or
computer outside the Unix server room (i.e., volume levels, etc.).
* Student Assts. should NOT bring others with them into offices/rooms
who are not working for us.
* There should be no access to rooms outside the Unix server room and
Garnet's office. Student Assts. may use Garnet's phone/computer as
long as they do not change settings, etc. Keys to Kellas and the
Unix server room will be the only ones given to our assistants.
3. What's Important to accomplish by next week?
- Work on AppleTalk zone problems. (Bob/Justin)
- Meet on TCP/IP hosts/services on 4/3/95 (Bob/Justin/Dave)
- Update Network Services HOTLINE documentation.
4. Continuation of discussion on our roles for network problems and how/when to
alert campus of problems with network services:
- Justin will contact Brenda when there are problems by using x2888. This
number must be used for network problem alerts ONLY.
- Began discussing which services (e.g., telephone, email) are mission
critical. We identified those times when we felt we should respond as
quickly as possible to problems or disruption of service.
*Telephone service should be operational 24hrs/day, 7 days/week,
365 days/year. If there is a problem, we need to respond ASAP.
Brenda would be the team member to contact.
*Television service problems should be responded to as quickly as
possible when problems are encountered during 8am - 10pm (Sun. - Fri.)
and 10am - 10pm (Saturday).
*Internet access (campus-related) problems should be responded to as
quickly as possible when problems are encountered during 6am - 10pm
(Sun. - Fri.) .....discussion on this to be continued.
6. Next meeting Weds, 4/5 @ 8:00am
