1. One of the Shiva 8-port LANRovers has been fixed and returned to us. Justin will hook it up and see if both will now work together without problems. If not, we will send the other unit out for repair before the warranty expires.
2. Bob will talk to the Library (Keith or Geri) about paying for the parts to install their DECserver ($43.81 -- Geri has agreed to pay for the parts and the cost will be recharged).
3. Bob asked what other trade journals and technology literature team members were reading to get a sense of how much redunancy there is by reading the same things. He suggested that if everyone selected particular items to read and would share important trends and developments with the others that we could cut down on the amount of material that must be read each week to remain current. There was a less than enthusiastic response to the suggestion because it would mean that each person would be responsible for reading material each--something that no one was willing to guarantee they could do consistently.
Bob suggested that he create a list of material he reads and distribute that to the team members. They, in turn, would add any material to the list that was not already on there and indicate what they read that is on the list. The purpose of this would be to identify what is being read over the week/month and how much redundancy there is.
Bob emphasized the importance of staying current with trends and developments in networking/telecommunications because it is the most rapidly changing area of our work.
4. Bob asked that team members consider voice/video/data network maintenance/expansion needs to plan for lapsing funds and departmental budgeting for next year.
5. Continuation of discussion on alerting campus of problems with network services:
o Voice-Mail (cont'd) Students would probably be the first to find that there was a problem with voice-mail because their auto-attendants would not work
o E-mail (cont'd) There was considerable discussion of the types of problems that we should alert the campus about--minor vs. major problems. With E-mail, the problem could be anywhere from the user's computer to a problem somewhere out on the Internet. Also, even if E-mail can't go off campus, it could still be used on-campus.
It was generally agreed that regardless of the nature of the problem,
we should:
It was generally agreed that we should employ the following strategies
to inform the campus of problems and work-around information:
o Bob asked WHO would inform the campus about problems and who would be responsible for developing work-around strategies and making that information available. We'll continue our discussion on this in the next Team meeting.
Next meeting (Tues, 1/31 @ 8am)
ps. Bob and Dave met with Geri Linkins and Keith Compeau yesterday (Weds) to discuss their CD-ROM LAN plans. We are going to try to experiment a little with this project. Keith will purchase additional memory to the CD-ROM servers and then put this LAN directly on our campus network.
Question: Is the library on Channel 3?
