The current hardware policy for the acquisition of campus computing resources is based upon present advancements in personal computer operating systems. These advancements include the use of a graphical user interface (GUI) promoting ease-of-use, a consistent system environment across all applications, multi-tasking capabilities, integrated communications/networking , an emphasis on interoperability and connectivity, and large memory management capabilities. In order to take advantage of these advancements, the campus computing hardware policy outlines the following strategy for acquiring new personal computing resources:
1. promote and support the purchase of hardware to that which is capable of supporting those advanced operating systems features outlined above
2. reduce the purchase of hardware which is not capable of supporting those advanced operating systems features outlined above
3. maintain support for older hardware systems and access to the information stored on them during the transition (viz., file translations, file transfers, communications)
Goals:
To evaluate and make recommendations on all computer purchases based upon the current campus computing hardware policy
To evaluate and revise the campus computing hardware policy as needed
The amount of software which is currently on the market, combined with the increasing needs of individuals for this software as greater numbers of personal computers are purchased, points to the necessity of software acquisition and software support policies and guidelines. These policies and guidelines are intended to promote flexible, cost-effective, legal, and informed software acquisition and support services for the campus.
Goals:
To establish a list of software supported by the Computer Center
To adopt a software policy which outlines the College's position on intellectual rights and software piracy
To establish a consistent and progressive policy for purchasing, supporting and using software on campus in a way that enhances the other goals of our campus computing plan
To ensure that licenses are established and maintained for software used on campus
