Wiring project page Attending: John Horan, Doug Brown, Garnet Barrigar, Carmen Casolara, Justin Sipher, Brenda Bennett, Bob Jewett 1. Next meeting: 10/11/95 2. Discussed major milestones toward reaching our goal of wiring all student rooms and functional spaces in the residence hall with Category-5 cable (approximately 2,800 total connections based upon 2,600 beds and 200 other functional space locations. By January '96: - Students will be looking for off-campus hoursing upon their reutrn from the holidays (January '96). Their arrangements will probably be made by April '96. - We should have information published in the Racquette and other information channels so students are aware of what is happening. - New students will be making decisions on a college to attend and we should be sure that all of our marketing materials reflect access to the network from student rooms. By April '96: - Need to know the order in which buildings will be wired so that summer programming plans for residences can be made by April 1st. - Students returning in the Fall ('96) will sign-up for room assignments by mid- to late-April. By July '96: - This is the most active part of the summer for residential occupancy. Bowman Hall is used for approximately 2 weeks in the summer. By start of Fall '96 semester: - cat-5 cable pulled to each room faceplate, terminated at the closet and the room faceplate and tested for continuity. 3. Discussed other issues which must be addressed during this project: Network Interface Cards (NICs) - we will need to evaluate and select the NIC(s) that will be supported. - we will need to determine whether students will purchase their own NIC (from our "supported list"), will rent them or will be provided as part of their room fee. At this point everyone seemed to prefer having students purchase their own NIC and cable from our College Bookstore. - who will install the NIC/cable? If we do, what is our liability for any problems encountered during installation? Student input - we need to invite student representatives to help us in shaping policies, guidelines and service/support strategies. Residential Computer Coordinators (RCCs) - we will need to hire students to act as RCCs. Some estimates from other schools suggest that 1 RCC can support 50 students. - we will need to identify the number of RCCs for budgeting purposes; students should be identified for this as soon as possible so we can train them before summer vacation and determine whether they are to be paid by the hour or given room. SUNYCard - will SUNYCard/ID # be used with this project (e.g, cabling for card readers, etc.) Training - we will need to develop a training program for RCCs and for professional support staff.
