NST Meeting 10/25/95

Network Services Team (NST)

Meeting Minutes 10/25/95

1. Last meeting: 10/11/95 Next meeting: 11/8/95

2. Status Reports:

   - Network Control Room

        * Ultrix boxes on the switching hub?

           - the transceivers arrived, but the Ultrix boxes won't be
moved until the Flagg IP problem is solved (see below).

        * UPS for network segments during power outages

           - Carm has calculated the power requirements for placing
all LanRovers, the Wellfleet router, FastPath and the DSU
on a UPS (1400 vAmps). The cost is approx. $520. We will
             place the order for this.

           - The Raymond HUB requires a 600 vAmp UPS for approx. $260. We
will order this one as well.

           - Carm will calculate the UPS needs for the bridges on Raymond
5th floor. Since these bridges are tied into the DEC hubs,
the UPS requirements will be higher. We won't order anything
yet until we test the other UPS's.

           - Justin did not feel we needed a UPS for the AppleShare
             servers or the Web servers.

   - Switching hub (Carm/Justin)

        * Are we seeing any performance/load improvements?

           - we don't know because we have nothing to compare it to--yet.

        * Have we established a baseline of traffic/errors on our net?

           - we discussed what to measure and use as our "baseline":

Bandwidth: we want to know the average % of bandwidth utilized
for each network segment for each hour of the day.
Carm will determine the segments we currently have so that
we know where to measure bandwidth utilization.

Alignment Errors: we want to get a baseline of how
many errors we are getting per day using the Chipcom hub
               management software.

Total Errors: We need to know the % of all errors
we are getting on the network per minute.

           - Justin will work with Carm to establish the baseline info.
using the Chipcom software and Skyline.

   - Any Network Services projects pending/waiting?

         * nothing other than a wall in Merritt being removed. It has
           a network faceplate on it.

   - 2Gb drive for Unix servers. (Dave) Installed?

         * Dave said that the drive will be installed when he moves
the Ultrix boxes to the switching hub.

   - Shiva LANRover status. (Justin)

         * list of accounts created and message composed to send to
those users no longer actively involved with the College

         * Another LanRover on order. Needs to be installed using 8
modems/telephone lines. Concerns? Any anticipated problems?

         * A 3rd LanRover has been ordered. We discussed issues related
to managing the user list since the problematic LanRover will
be used for faculty/staff. We also discussed where to get the
modems for the LanRover and how to manage modem access to
the VAXes (limiting access to 60 minutes).

We will look into purchasing two (2) 28.8 modems for the
LanRovers (not sure which yet). We will remove 6 of the 14.4
modems from the VAX modem pool and use them with the 3rd Lan
Rover. The VAX modem pool will then have:

                 4 - high speed modems (267-4822)
                 2 - 2400 baud modems (267-4821)
                 3 - 1200 baud modems (267-4820)

We will separate some of the faculty/staff dial-in ports for
exclusive use by our department so that we can get access to
           provide technical support.

   - Network bridge "programming" Done? (Carm)

         * No.

   - Flagg Classroom IP problem with local Web servers. (Dave)

         * Dave/Justin discovered that the subnet mask for the Web
server had been set incorrectly. Everything works fine now.

   - Wiring the "dorms" project. (Bob)

         * SGA Assembly proposal with Jean Scott this Thursday 10/26 to
discuss the upcoming technology fee. Justin/Bob will present
           with Jean.

         * COPS loan application requested for $864,000.

   - NYSERNet Gateway Pilot project (Justin)

         * No news here.

   - Still finding errors in Bowman/Crumb as reported by Carm in the last
     team meeting? (Carm)

         * Everything looks ok now.

3. New items:

   - We establish the following priorities for the next 2 weeks:

       (1) - Fix the Flagg Classroom IP problem (Done!)
       (2) - Fix the "Default Zone" problem (Done!)
       (3) - Work on the network baseline information (see above)

4. Planning

   - Voice services plan. (Bob/Brenda)

   - Important goals for 95-96:
       * IMAP email server before 9/1/95
       * Moving VMS email users to our Unix mail server.
       *  28.8 modems for LanRovers.

   - Our roles for network problems and how/when to alert campus of problems with network services:

       * backup role for Justin's role and David's role.
       * Brenda's role as information clearinghouse and her backup.
