1. Next meeting: Weds, 7/19/95 @ 9am 2. Meeting Goals for today: - NS/NS1 failures. Dave reported that NS "hung up" at 8:15am on 7/11; then NS1 "hung up" at 10:15am. He is uncertain of the reason for the problems encountered. DNS on the two machines is always running, so if one goes down, the other machine provides DNS services. However, our clients (Macs/PCs) need to be configured for a primary and secondary DNS service (in our BOOTP records?) Dave, Justin and Bob will meet during the week of 7/17 to discuss DNS, IMPAP email services and general Unix support. - Review minutes/assignments made last week (6/19) * Survey of student ownership of technology in residence halls. (Bob, Brenda) We discussed potential items for the survey which included: - computer (platform, CPU), if owned - Do you plan to purchase a computer to use in your room? If so, from campus? from retail store? what kind? - If you had a direct connection to the campus network from your room, would you bring a computer or buy one? - Do you have a printer in your room? If so, what type? _______________________ - Do you use the College's printing services? Do you want to use them via the campus network? - Are you interested in computer training/workshops? If so, what type? ___________________ - Would you be interested in a position as a residential computer coordinator? - What technology or service is most important for you in your room? - What technology or service do you want most in your room? * AppleTalk routing (recommendations from NJ workshop) (Carm, Justin) Tabled until next meeting (7/19/95) - Other items: * SUNYNet down on Sunday 7/16/95 from 8:00 AM until noon. This will affect traffic for anyone connected to the System Admin. hub, and the SUNYNet/NYSERNet gateway. Discuss our response to this (customer notification). SUNYNet weekend/evening/holiday priority calling list. We reviewed this list and noted corrections that must be made and sent to SUNYNet. Brenda will create an email list from our voice mail list and we will use that to alert our campus about the SUNYNet outage. [See list] * Goals/priorities for start of Fall '95 semester: 1. Email accounts for new students/employees (Dave). Must wait until Banner information is complete. A "batch job" takes 2 days to generate the accounts. Dave is currently working on cleaning up the current list of accounts to remove inactive ones. 2. Voice services for students (voice-mail, auto-attendants, etc.) Brenda and Karen will complete this over the next few weeks. 3. Remote access (network dial-in) for Macs documented and software installation automated. Justin will assign this to Rob and it should only take a day. 4. Flagg Classroom. Some wiring needs to be done and the IP routing will be handled by Dave and Mike Nuwer. 5. Movie channel technology. Need to move channels to free up Channel 3 for "special programming. (Carm/Garnet) 6. Consolidate network equipment in Kellas. Justin will contact SUNYNet to emphasize that we want the Wellfleet installed before 2nd week of classes. (see notes on this below) 7. Adds/Moves/Changes to switch. Brenda will also follow-up on Crane's request for wiring the Schuette Lab. 8. "Introduction to Information Technology" on the Web. This team will need to contribute documentation and information for this document. 3. What's Important to accomplish by next week? - Unix meeting (Bob, Justin, Dave) - Seed router for AppleTalk if the Kellas Server (SE30) crashes again. (Justin) 4. Status Reports: - Network Control Room (Wellfleet, servers, etc.) (Carm) Bob asked everyone to review the minutes from the meeting on consolidating our network services equipment and let him know if there other concerns or problems with our current approach. - Establishing a new seed router (Bob/Justin) (tabled) - Shiva LANRover problems/update. (Bob/Justin) Replacement LanRover is in place and seems to be working well. - 2Gb drive for News server. (Dave) Dave has contacted the company, but no word yet on replacement. - Flagg Classroom update. (Dave) Room renovations are still going on. - x4000 Data Entry Form (Bob) Bob and Justin will work on the development of a 4D form for data entry of network logs made to x4000. - Wiring the "dorms" project. (Bob) Bob mentioned that the President is considering a technology fee ($25 to $50/semester to fund this effort, as well as other technology. (NOTE: this will not happen in the Fall. It may be instituted in the Spring.) 5. Planning - Important goals for 95-96: * IMAP email server before 9/1/95 * Moving VMS email users to our Unix mail server. * 28.8 modems for LanRovers. - Voice services plan.
