Present: Garnet Barrigar, Brenda Bennett, David Brouwer, Carmen Casolara,
           Bob Jewett, Justin Sipher

1. Old Business: - Shiva LANRover problems/update. Bob talked with Eric Wilson at Shiva and he suggested having Al Walker, tech support, contact us regarding a upgrade of our LanRovers to 3.2. He didn't want us to purchase the 3.5 upgrade until we were satisfied with our current servers. Justin recommended that we upgrade directly to 3.5, even though there's a $99 charge to do so. In related developments, we discovered that the Asante transceiver boxes in the new Carson facility were creating tremendous numbers of network errrors. Apparently, if you place more than 9 of them on the same ethernet segment, they create serious problems. Greg will be sending 15 Apple transceivers to us to test in Carson to determine if the problem is the transceivers or the Macs/network configuration. Carm reported there have also been alot of network errors emanating from Satterlee Hall and the Kellas Classroom. Each of those areas also have alot of Asante transceiver boxes. Carm and Garnet will look for other high-error rates and then test the ethernet segment for length problems (too long) and determine if there are any Asante transceiver boxes on those segments. Carm will send email to the team with the list of areas with high error rates. - Library CD-ROM server. No news. Dave will be meeting with Keith this week and will ask him at that time about the status of the memory upgrade for their CD-ROM server. - TCP/IP Optimization. Dave is still working on the NetNews logfile and will send the results to the team for our next meeting. - Student access to Unix server room (next to Garnet's office). Carm checked all of the keys needed to access the Unix server room. Eric and other student assts. need the following keys: #23 to get into the Kellas building #74 to get into the back corridors through the blue doors #61 to get into the Unix server room Garnet will tell Eric and Bill Jaeger to turn in their #108 key to Manola. - Network Services WWW page. Bob pointed out that he created a new WWW page that addresses our "Wiring the "dorms" project. There's not much there at the moment, but we have alot of vendor information from our meetings that could be incorporated. Also, we need to define our goals for this project. The URL is: www.dctm.potsdam.edu/documents/DEPT/NST/wiringproj.html - Monitoring # of calls to our modem pool. Brenda presented her report on peak usage of our modem pools. She will be monitoring these reports on a daily basis and will notify Carm is any active modem pool shows zero (0) calls answered (may mean that the modems are hung). 2. New Business: - Dates we expect to finish our summer projects (tabled until next week). - Important goals to reach for 1995-96 (tabled until next week). - Network ADD for Juliana Degone, Mental Health (Van Housen Hall). Juliana made a request to have 1 faceplate added for a PC in their office area. Bob sent her the Network Service Request form to fill out. Carm and Garnet will estimate the cost of the ADD. - Network workshops/seminars. * Training Center Networking Update (May 2-3). Bob will check into attending this session at the SUNY Training Center. * Anixter vendor seminar in Syracuse (May 9-11). Carm and Garnet will consider attending this. * Network Group workshop in New Jersey (June 22-23) on network trouble- shooting. Bob has requested lSD lapsing funds to send 2 NST members to this. (NOTE: ISD Directors approved this 4/20) - Brenda distributed the remaining pagers to Dave, Bob and herself. Everyone on the Network Services Team now has a pager. They are: Garnet - 3165 Justin - 3166 Carmen - 3167 Dave - 6020 Brenda - 6025 Bob - 6030 To reach a team member, dial 386-4548 and follow instructions. If you are outside the Canton exchange, dial (800) 444-2337. - In discussing how to determine what has been added/removed/changed on our campus network, we agreed that we should maintain a log. Brenda suggested establishing a voice-mailbox that we could use to record each time a student or employee installs, removes or changes a connection to the network (printer, computer, router, etc.). We agreed to try this to see if this is a viable way of entering data. Brenda will monitor this voice-mailbox for activity and create the log entries from messages that are left. The message for x4000 is: After the tone please leave a message which includes the following: Your name, whether you performed an add move or a change, the location of the add, move or change and the decal number assigned to the equipment involved. There is no need to leave the time and date you are calling as this message will automatically be date and time stamped. However, if this work was performed other than now, please leave the date and time the work was completed 3. What's Important to accomplish by next week? - AppleTalk zone problems/network errors - use strategy outline above. (Carm/Garnet) - publish HTML-based documentation. (Team) - Library CD-ROM server update (Dave) - report on "filtered" NetNews groups (Dave) - establishing x4000 for voice-mail recording of add/changes/moves to the network (Brenda) 4. Continuation of discussion on our roles for network problems and how/when to alert campus of problems with network services: Bob talked to Peter Brouwer about the level of expectation the campus has for network services (responsiveness to outages). Peter indicated that he felt the campus wanted and expected good service, but that level of expectation varied depended upon the time (evenings, weekends, holidays). During off-hour times, the expectation is that one could register problems and complaints about network problems and that we would respond to those problems as soon as reasonably possible. It will be up to us as a team to establish an action plan that gives the level of service we want to offer and that meets the criteria of addressing problems, "...as soon as reasonably possible." 5. Next meeting Weds, 4/26 @ 8:00am AGENDA items (see calendar for latest revisions): Review how x4000 is working Continue discussion on and document (same as 4/19): - reports (Bob, Brenda, Dave) - when an after-hours alert requires our attention - backup role for Justin's role as coordinator for network service problems - Brenda's role as information clearinghouse and her backup. - how to program (record messages) for the HOTLINE (x2884)
