English Interview-3/96
Interview: Mark Coleman, English Department Date: 3/25/96 Interviewer: Bob Jewett
1. Do you have plans for special initiatives and/or projects for the 96-97 school year that involve technology? -- for your students, your faculty, your department? a. Upgrading the computer (currently a Mac IIci), printers (currently an ImageWriter and an older LaserWriter) and the scanner in the faculty workroom. This has been submitted to the Dean for consideration. b. Many of the faculty still have very old computers (Mac SEs) and only a handful have color monitors. Two faculty are using Intel-based machines (Weber and Sarkela). A prioritized list of faculty needing upgraded equipment will be sent to the Dean. c. Mark Coleman will be teaching a special course during the Spring '97 semester that will incorporate the use of PageMaker (v6.0). It will be important to install PageMaker (purchased through an internal grant) on the computers in Carson 101 for instruction and to have PageMaker available elsewhere for students to use to complete their assignments. d. David Weber will continue to maintain a Web server he is developing for the Speech Communication Association. He may request support as he did recently when his student intern needed a workspace to test the Web server. (We worked out an arrangement with Residence Life for him to use one of their workrooms.) e. Tony Tyler will continue to develop collabrative pedagogies using the Carson and Kellas classrooms and to publish "Blueline" with editorial assistance from Stephanie DeGhett and Robert Foster. f. Faculty will continue to use their computers for advising and on-line registration and for library access and more general use of the WWW. g. Network access (faceplate) is needed in Morey 107 and 114 classrooms. h. Pete Baker will continue to do design and publications work for the department and the college. i. Judith Weise will continue to develop teaching materials. j. Faculty will review the computing requirement in COMP 101. 2. Student Computing Access Program (SCAP) proposals: a. Replace all of the Mac Plus computers in Morey 110 with Mac SE computers from the residence centers. b. Acquire software necessary to support shared screens/conferencing to be used in Tony Tyler's COMP 101 and Magazine Article Writing courses. The software may be "Aspects". Tony is currently evaluating software. 3. What are your most important concerns and priorities for the 96-97 school year? -- for your students, your faculty, your department? a. Replacing the Morey 110 computers (see 2a above under SCAP). b. Software for Tony Tyler's COMP 101 and Magazine Article Writing courses (see 2b above under SCAP). c. Support, as requested, for Dave Weber. d. Support, as requested, for Mark Coleman's Spring '97 course. 4. How can we improve our services and support to meet your needs? - No particular concerns over moving Levitt Center to Kellas or moving the Mac classroom to the library, though the Kellas location for the Levitt Center will be less central and less visible. It will be important to at least maintain the hours of access that Levitt has now. We should make an extra effort to make the Levitt Center look as attractive as possible.
