Dean, School of Arts & Sciences Interview - 3/96
Interview: Galen Pletcher, Dean. School of Arts & Sciences Date: 3/6/96 and 3/15/96 Interviewer: Bob Jewett
1. Priorities for Information Technology for 1996-97 (in order of importance): a. Flagg 162 computer classroom support. Mike Nuwer may not be available to provide support for this facility during the 96-97 school year because of his teaching commitments. b. Getting all faculty on email, especially the chairs (Jim Sutter, Art). c. Support for Ron Woodbury's IT project (may not be implemented until Spring '98) d. What can we do to help departments achieve what they hope to accomplish with departmental labs-- particularly if we do not support department lab proposals; for example, chemistry, biology, art, and philosophy? 2. Supporting faculty-maintained professional organizations using campus network resources (Web server, access lines). This is an important part of faculty development and should be supported. We could set a limit on the nubmer of professional organizations that could be supported given our current resources and then let the individual schools determine which organizations will be supported. The limit would be based upon the capacity of our resources to handle the increased traffic. It would be important to perform an annual review of School's decision so that faculty could inform their organizations if campus support was no longer going to be provided and that they could identify other options. 3. Where can DCTM improve? No specific concerns or suggestions. Would support a proposal to release faculty 0.25 time to provide direct technology support for faculty in the School of Arts & Sciences. Faculty selected to provide this support should be knowledgeable and "approachable". 4. Other projects that should be supported: None.
