Season Preview
Women's Soccer Readies for Season

Release Date: September 20, 1999
POTSDAM - After taking their lumps on the road for the past three weeks, the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team is looking forward to playing at home. The Bears (0-5, 0-2) will host St Lawrence University on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
"It is always nice to play in front of your own fans," said first year head coach Kirsten Keegan. " We have struggled lately, but our players feel good about facing St. Lawrence at home."  St. Lawrence (4-3) is coming off a two game slump, after opening the season 4-1.  Laura LoGiudice '00 (Thornwood/JFK) has paced the Saints with two goals and three assists this season.   Freshman goalkeeper Maggiet O'Neil (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) has seen most of the action for the Saints and has a .820; goals against average and a .860 save percentage.
With only one veteran, Kasha Holler '01 (Fairport/Fairport) returning on defense, Keegan has juggled her lineup to solidify the back line.  Liz Plath '01 (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley), Mary English '01 (Albany/ Schalmont), and Erika Townsend '02 (Waterport/Lyndonville) have all moved to defense, while newcomers Lora Masci '02 (Hemlock/Honeoye), Liz Pageau '03 (Lyon Mountain/Northern Adirondak), and Jennifer Sorrell '00 (Marcy/Utica Notre-Dame) have time to develop.
The Bears have had to rely heavily on all-conference goalkeeper Jill Paterson '01 (Fulton/G.Ray Bodley) to keep games close. Patterson has made 101 saves in five games. At midfield veterans Michelle Frank '00 (Canton/Canton), Shannon Bradt '00 (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills), and Melissa Servissa '02 (Massena/Massena) have guided newcomers Michelle Julius '03 (Rochester/Greece Olympia), and Leslie Taylor '03 (Harrisville/Harrisville).
The Bears offense has struggled but Keegan is confident that her three seniors Kelly Rivette (Cohoes/Tamarac), Redel Revette (DeRuyter/DeRuyter) and Kasia Sweredowski (Lowville/Lowville) will get the offense back on track.
Look for newcomers April Miller '03 (Altona/Northern Adirondak), Teshia Hutt '02 (Heuvelton/Heuvelton) and Lisa Shernesky '01 (Auburn/Jordan-Elbridge) to make an impact at the forward position.  Miller has the Bears lone goal of the season and may split time between forward and midfield.
Bear Tracks.Goaltender Jill Paterson '01 has a .856 save percentage and a 2.1 goals against average. Defensive leader Kasha Holler '01 maybe sidelined with the flu, which has plagued the Bears. Potsdam will host Oswego State on Friday at 4 p.m. and Cortland State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
