The New York Times on microfilm (1851-date), and the New York Times Index (Ref AI 21.N45).  And for local history, the Northern New York Historical Newspapers, a searchable digital collection.

Popular magazines:  You can find in Crumb Library quite a few magazines from the period of the 1920s and 1930s.  Some are in the stacks with call numbers beginning AP2.  Many popular magazines from this period are indexed in the paper index called Readers’ Guide to Periodical Literature – in Ref AI 3.R48
