Residential Networking

UVM Conference 5/12/95

Issues:

1. IP addressing
   - dynamic (must have ethernet address for each machine to go on the net)
   - fixed (must manually enter IP address in each computer)

2. Intalling a computer on the network
   - DOS/Windows (45' to 1 hour)
   - Mac (10')

3. Support
   - RCCs can be expected to be awakened at all hours with problems by other
       other students (printing, connecting, etc.)
   - RCCs can be expected to be faced with all types of problems other than
       networking (printing, applications, etc.)
   - Don't ask students who are lab aides, consultants during the day to
be RCCs; they will burn out
   - Set strict policies initially, then back off as possible
   - SLIP support is *far* more costly in terms of labor than direct networking
   - expect games, etc. to chew up tremendous amounts of residential network
       bandwidth
   - 1 RCC should be albe to handle 50 students
