Last meeting: 2/19/97 Next meeting: 3/18/97
1. Van Housen cabling job for Social Services - Carm recommends that we not take on this job. Since we don't know how long Social Services will occupy Van Housen, it doesn't make sense to invest time/resources into a cabling job that Social Services is not interested in and will not make use of. They want a "quick-and-dirty" cable job that they can do themselves. [3/17 NOTE: I informed Bill Fisher of our decision and he has written to Mark Stoddart (Director of Public Health) to inform him that they should proceed on their own.] 2. PACES email distribution - Dave alerted us to a email distribution job that PACES wants to do each week. They are sending announcements to their 2600 Bear Express Card holders. Unfortunately, the first message listed all recipients and consequently the message will difficult to process (took the mail server 2 hrs) and consumed an inordinate amount to disk space. [3/17 NOTE: I asked PACES to reconsider their use of email for this marketing effort. They will discuss it at their next marketing meeting] 3. Cabling Crane - Carm has prepared a proposal to cable areas of Crane not currently served by the campus network. He has walked a couple of local contractors through to look at the job. This will be a lapsing funds' request. 4. Joe Sarnoff's request to cable the Barrington Union display sign so that it can be programmed from Joe's office. Not considered feasible at this time. Review this at 3/18 meeting. 5. Bookstore cabling - Carm wants to bring network cabling to the two student apartments in the Union because it can be done while cabling the bookstore. [3/18 NOTE: Carm/Garnet have done this] 6. Email distribution lists - what is our policy? (discuss at 3/18 meeting) This question stems from item #2 above. 7. Electronics update - we will be ordering more hub/switch cards to increase the port density for growing areas. Each of the DEC400 hubs is being upgraded with additional memory and the latest firmware version. 8. Lapsing funds items: - Flagg 162: replace thinnet with 10BaseT to increase the reliability of the connection to each computer. One possibility is to use a DEC900 32-port hub @ $1500. Another possibility is to install "troughs" to stabilize the network cables running between computers. Follow-up in 3/18 meeting. - Upgrade/replace the telephone billing PC so that it has a CD-ROM drive and more memory. 9. Network services' coverage: - postpone discuss until 3/18 meeting. Get notes from previous meetings where we have discussed coverage. - look at coverage for state holidays when classes are in session. What is our responsibility for maintaining network services at such times?
