Network Services Team (NST)

Meeting Minutes - 2/19/97

Last meeting: 2/4/97 Next meeting: 3/5/97
    1. NYSERNet appears to have installed the third T1 to Potsdam. Once they install their new router (first of March), we may be able to remove the firewall [3/17/97 NOTE: Obviously hasn't happened. Update in 3/18 meeting]     2. PACES - No timeline on the replacement of the Stowell/Raymond Chipcom hubs. This job will be done after installing the memory/firware in the DEC400 switches.     3. Lapsing funds items:   - upgrade our Unix mail server   - network electronics (switch cards, etc.)     4. Acquiring additional DID telephone lines:   - $9000/year for additional ten (10) DID lines to SUNY Potsdam. This is too expensive an option that will only be needed 7-8months out of the year (see previous meeting notes on the problem of busy lines due to modem usage and increased calls to campus)   - callers do not seem upset over getting a busy signal. This situation occurs for a few (up to 4 hrs) on certain days only. This would affect an emergency call into the campus if it happened during the peak hours.     5. Dial-in Access:   - we will provide 5 dial-in lines for work-related use only. Individuals who want to use this special service must get permission from their department head/chair.   - Dave will do the documentation for PCs; Romeyn will do the documentation for Macs.   - There have been no more reported problems with dial-in modems. However, the Shiva LanRovers crashed twice last week.
