Network Services Team (NST)

Meeting Minutes - 2/4/97

Last meeting: 1/9/97 Next meeting: 2/19/97
    1. PACES wiring   There is a PACES meeting on 2/26 to discuss technical details with the Griffin technology (card readers, cash registers, etc.) and how to employ their devices on our network.   We still need to make progress with installing the remaining electronics so that we can design VLANs on the network to handle security concerns with PACES business running on our network cable plant.   There have been problems with IPX packets crossing the ATM backbone and that is why the Stowell upgrade did not take place as planned on Feb. 1 [NOTE: Those problems have now been solved]. The plan now is to upgrade the Stowell hub on Sat. 2/15 [NOTE: That has been postponed] and Raymond on Sat. 3/1 (?).     2. Justin, Carm and Garnet will work together on what the fiber card needs are for our DEC Switch 400s. We need to buy at least one card, and possibly 2.   They will also make a proposal for uninterruptible power supplies for the gigaSwitch and the DEC 400s.     3. ResNet   NetNews - local (Potsdam) newsgroups work fine. We are not getting off campus feeds. Dave suggested users take advantage of a web-based news service (www.dejanews.com). [NOTE: Bob sent out a message to the brown-bag list informing them of this. We need to tell our students as well. Suggestions??]     POP mail - Dave noticed that Armando's POP mail frequency is far too frequent and may be contributing to our recent email problems. It was suggested that Darrin contact Armando to correct this.     4. Modems   Justin found 5 modems improperly configured to the Shiva LANRover. Fixing that seems to have cleared up the dial-in problems users were complaining about (modem answers, but no connection is made).   Brenda pointed out that our modem activity is competing with telephone callers who are trying to dial into the campus. The caller gets a busy signal because all of our dial-in lines (DID) are active. We may need to research adding DID capacity or restricting the limit of modem users. There are 48 dial-in lines to our current modem pool. [NOTE: Brenda reports that we presently have 48 DID lines, 80 DOD lines 24 TSAA lines that are DID].   Brenda will check on the cost of adding DID lines and strategies for allocating DID lines for modems vs. callers.     5. Segmenting dial-in access to the network.   We want to devote 5 dial-in lines for employees, 3 for DC/TM and 24 for students. Brenda will create a new hunt group for employees [NOTE: done] and Paula will create 2 userlists -- one for employees; one for students   Dave and Justin will work with the Helpdesk to develop the necessary documentation for employees who will need how to change their dial-in configuration to take advantage of this.     6. President's House   Carm reports that the President's house may need new network connectivity. Something to plan for...     7. Telephone lines in Residence Halls   Carm would like to redo the East/North wings of Knowles this summer and switch their phones to the new cable plant. Bowman and Lehman will continue to use the old cable plant.
