Network Services Team (NST)

Meeting Minutes - 1/9/97

Last meeting: 7/24/96 Next meeting: 2/4/97
    1. Continuing to meet as the Network Services Team:   We agreed that we need to continue meeting so that networking concerns/issues don't fall between the cracks of our current department teams. Our next meeting is scheduled for:   2/4/97 - Tuesday - 9am - Kellas 218   Darrin will be invited to attend this meeting so that we can share information about ResNet. (Ok w/ you, Darrin?)       2. PACES is creating new network service and support concerns with their expansion of SUNYCard use of vending machines, cash registers, etc. Bob will ask Mike L/PACES to set up a meeting to discuss:   - who controls and manages (takes responsibility for) the cable plant that supports PACES' operations? [NOTE: the meeting is being scheduled for next week]   - how should card readers, cash registers, vending machines, etc. be connected to our campus network? via ethernet or hardwire or...?   - whenever there is a question about using student accounts (e.g., student printing using SUNYCard), Brenda and Cynthia should be included in those discussions/plans.     3. We should begin planning for the expansion/improvement of our underground/house-pairs cable plant. These plans are critical to and will driven by the following developments:   - campus telephone service when the switch is paid for (July, 2000). We are looking at providing every residential student with a phone; handling student billing, etc.   - PACES card-readers, vending machines, etc. (described in #2 above)   - growth plans for our modem pool   - campus plans for its fire-alarm system   - campus plans for door-entry via SUNYCard (residence halls, etc.)       4. We need to consider planning for the upgrade and expansion of our existing campus network. Issues to consider include:   - replace thinnet?   - what other upgrades and enhancements should we anticipate and what is needed?     5. We should discuss costs/billing for the addition of phone lines. It may be necessary to bill some fee for any additional phone lines because this type of request requires us to purchase additional ports in the switch.
