1. Qmail testing (respond to Russ Nelson's request) 2. Power outage on 5/28, 5/29, 5/30 to 10 buildings (Tony DiTullio) [How we handled it last year - May, '95] Doug and Justin will need to develop a strategy to deal with printers in buildings that will lose power. 3. Prepare list of NST summer projects and deadline dates for 5/30 meeting (refer to last year's list [5/1/95] for helpful information) 4. Responding to problems with communication services (voice, video, data) and backup procedures for: Background references: - 3/31/95 NST meeting discussing criteria for responding to problems (Ok as described; 24x7 except Christmas, New Years) - Peter Brouwer's expectation for service (4/19/95) a. Telephone system: - on-campus loss of service (switch) Sat/Sun [10am-10pm]; Mon/Fri [8am-10pm] - long-distance service (NYNEX T1) [Our notes from outage last summer 6/95] The 5/11/96 outage of the T1 power supply was the 4th outage to date. If we lose off-campus access to the Internet again, we should contact Public Safety to have them check to see if we have lost our long-distance calling too (they could try a long distance # to, for example, Ogdensburg State Police). If they can't make a long-distance call then they should contact the following staff who are within a local call: 1. Carm Casolara 2. Bob Jewett 3. Garnet Barrigar 4. Justin Sipher 5. Dave Brouwer Brenda will check with NYNEX to determine how we are to contact them after-hours when there is a problem with long-distance service. Carm will document the procedure to check to see if the T1 power supply is working properly or not. References - 4/5/95 NST meeting b. Data network * Respond to Internet access problems [Mon/Fri 6am-10pm]; Sat/Sun [10am-10pm] * The first person to contact about network problems: During business hours (8am - 5pm) - Justin Durings Evening/Weekends/Holidays + in the residence halls - new Res. Computing Supervisor + in offices/academic areas - Public Safety; they call Justin Bob will check with Tim Ashley to see if this is OK. * BACKUP contact - If Justin is not available, Dave will the next person to call. If Dave is not available, then call Carm, Bob or Garnet. NOTE: We should inform the rest of the department, all HELPDESK staff, and the user community once these procedures on written and approved. Unix & TCP/IP services (DNS, Email server, bootp, interactive Unix host) * The first person to contact about Unix or TCP/IP problems: Dave Brouwer (assuming Justin, or his backup, has determined that the problem is a Unix or TCP/IP problem) * BACKUP contact - If Dave is not available, contact our designated student helper during business hours during the academic semesters; otherwise, call Russ or Erik. References - unix_support071795.html A long-term goal should be to develop an ISD-based "Systems Management Team" which would be responsible for Unix, VMS systems. All members of the team (e.g., Dave Brouwer, Andy Harradine, John Flack, others?) would be crossed-trained on all of the systems, and back each other up. d. Web servers * The first person to contact about our Web servers is Justin. * BACKUP contact - If Justin is not available, contact Bob; If Bob is unavailable, contact Dave; then Carm or Garnet. NOTE: Justin needs to document how to bring these servers up if they crash or are powered off. e. Novell Netware servers: tabled until next meeting - DCC server (Dunn Hall) - Flagg server (Flagg computer classroom) f. TV/Videoconferencing services tabled until next meeting g. Dial-In Access to the Campus Network: * Respond to dial-In access [Mon/Fri 6am-10pm]; Sat/Sun [10am-10pm] * The first person to contact about our dial-in servers is Justin. * BACKUP contact - If Justin is not available, contact Garnet; If Garnet is unavailable, contact Bob; then Carm or Dave Brouwer. NOTE: Justin needs to document how to bring these servers up if they crash or are powered off.
