Last meeting: 3/21/96 Next meeting: 4/18/96

1. Status Reports:

a. Any Network Services projects pending/waiting? - We have the phone to install in the elevator. Waiting on a hole to be cut to install it. - Another "ringer" will be installed in the heating plant. b. Shiva LANRover status - No response from Shiva since Justin sent the last logfiles. c. Outsourcing our dial-in access and support. - Purpose: To relieve us of dial-in account management, user support, network problems for selected dial-in users or all users. Bob called St. Lawrence Internet Connection (SLIC - Nicholville Telephone Co.). The will handle client support for $0.80/min. via telephone calls only. We would need to give SLIC access to our LANRovers so they could reset passwords and check on the status of the dial-in servers. Justin and Dave will evaluate this proposal to see if this is the way we want to go. They will report on this as soon as possible. c. Wiring the "dorms" project. (Bob) - Current status (see Residential Wiring Project Web page) - see "downstreaming" access to Potsdam Central below. This would, complement our efforts to establish separate Internet access for the residence halls. d. Unix hosts - changeover status: BIND has been upgraded (might have been part of the problem). Russ recommends converting from SENDMail to QMail. The changeover can't occur until the problem with SENDMail is fixed. Dave will check with Russ about helping with the changeover. Erik must be paid before 5/1 or he will not be paid. - status of 2Gb drive? Being returned to us. Not indication of what the problem problem was or what was fixed. e. Security for Kellas Hall - Tim Ashley (Public Safety) report. Garnet feels he can install the security alarm system as outline by Time. He will prepare a proposal outlining how this will be done and how much it will cost. f. Network services work-order process. Next step(s)? We will address this at the next NST meeting (4/18). g. SPOTVB: Email list to notify users of 6/30/96. Dave is working on this list.

2. New items:

a. Downstream access to the Internet for Potsdam Central. - T1 access via NYSERNet "downstreaming" - How to connect their LAN to ours? (routing) Bob will contact Time-Warner about the cost of a cable connection from here to there. - Support issues: There should be no support other than providing the physical connection. Potsdam Central will do their own DNS, IP addressing and other TCP/IP services. Likely problems will occur with the CSU/DSU, router or the cable. Bob, Justin, Dave, Russ and Kathy Sipher (PCS) will meet on 4/4 to discuss these issues in more detail. b. Around the table: - Brenda: We need to inform students that only jack "A" will be live in their rooms (Knowles Hi-Rise West Wing, Draime and Van Housen only). The old telephone jacks are to be removed.
