1. Status Reports:

Any Network Services projects pending/waiting? Duplicating needs in Merritt 131 - Still to do; no complaints on this from Duplicating since they have a phone. Sen. Sears - moving to Raymond 2nd ISD offices - there were no problems with our cables as a result of the opening they cut intothe wall. There is no work order to date to provide any other network services. Shiva LANRover status - Cardinal 28.8 modems for the LanRovers?
We talked about acquiring additional dial-in access. Rather than order two 28.8 modems, we should purchase 10 and an additional Shiva LanRover. Bob will talk to Peter B. about this since this may qualify as a Student Technology Fee purchase. Wiring the "dorms" project. (Bob) - Vendor walkthroughs - how do we manage this? - Defining all specifications for student rooms, horizonal runs, wiring closets We reviewed a diagram Justin created to help establish definition of common terms used with vendors ("faceplate", "drop", "pull") - Project leader for cable infrastructure (defines specs, physical network design, leads our team on this part of the project Carm will be a lead person for this part of our project. He will be the one vendors contact to discuss this part of the project; to schedule "walk-throughs", etc. - Project leader for networking equipment/protocols (hubs, logical network design); leads our team on this part of the project Justin will be a lead person for this part of our project. He will be the one vendors contact to discuss this part of the project; to schedule design meetings, etc. - Project leader for user services/policies (defines acceptable use policy, guidelines, and leads our *department* on this part of the project Bob will be a lead person for this part of our project. He will work with Brenda to establish policy proposals, administrative guidelines and to review this with students (STAB). Switching hub (Carm/Justin) - Nothing new here; waiting upon Cabletron to install their hub/management software. Their hub has arrived. Skyline status (see 11/8 minutes) - OK, OK, no progress here, but Bob promises to move on this RSN (real soon now) Switching hub backup - consolidated all of this equipment? Garnet is working on this. 2Gb drive for Unix servers - and - a service contract on both Sun systems and the tape backup drive? (Dave) - we reviewed the needs of our network service servers (Sun Sparc servers) with Dave. We agreed to purchase a 2Gb drive from Sun as well as the maintenance contract for our 2 Sun Sparc servers. Security for Kellas Hall - Tim Ashley (Public Safety) to consult with us on Thursday. (Bob) - Dave told Erik to contact Public Safety when he arrives and when he leaves Kellas so they know who is in the building after hours? Internet downstream access - We got a message from Tom Neiss indicating that we can provide "downstream" access to the Internet, but not until the contract w/ NYSERNet has been signed (Note <2/6/96> - Justin said he had been told the contract was signed). There will be a fee for every site we give downstream access to.

2. New items:

Review of our work-related setups...are they still useful? necessary? x4000 (logging network activity, installs, etc.) - Are we logging the new computers and our recent network problems? Yes, but unreliably. Since we have not been utilitizing the information, we will no longer use this set up. - Log reports - if we use this, what reports do we want and how often? We will not longer use x4000, so there will be no reports. - x2884 (Network HOTLINE) We will drop this service as well. No one seems to be using it. Brenda will let Paula know to remove reference to it on our InfoChannel and on the Web. - Network services work-order process We want to automate this process. We reviewed the work-order form that Bob prepared for the Web. However, we need to know the current process that a work order goes through to determine how best to automate this process. Brenda will outline the current work-order process as she knows it. Once outlined we will review it to determine how to automate it. Our Backup strategy for responding to network problems (see Brenda's telephone # sheet) - we did not discuss this item. Workshops ("Remote Access"; "Managing Switched Internetworking") - Carm, Garnet and Justin will be attending. They will take materials with them to share with vendors at this seminar. Around the table:
