Pete B. said there was nothing new to report on the budget situation. He noted that the Priorities committee is finished, and has made its recommendations to the President.

The Associate Vice President for Information Services search has been taken off "hold".

Use of lapsing funds was discussed and prioritized. With known funding within the Information Services area, purchase orders will be prepared prior to May 1, as follows: Central Computing will order the back-up Alpha box ($27,446); Library will order a replacement Microfilm Reader and Printer ($11,000); Distributed Computing will order the two World Wide Web Servers ($4660), the Network troubleshooting workshop for two ($1700), and the 100 Timbuktu-Pro licenses for Windows ($1250). These orders total $46,056 and will be covered from CCUP and Information Services. If other lapsing funds become available, other items will be ordered; purchase orders should be prepared. Cynthia is keeping a spreadsheet on lapsing funds requests, and will send around updates.

Bruce distributed information on the 6510 migration to the 2100, and the issues involved were discussed.

Email was discussed. The agreed-upon general strategy is to eventually move everyone onto the client-server. Significant extra labor is involved because of the two-server mode. Moving to one would permit Distributed Computing to re-focus job distribution. "Externalities" must be considered when changing to a new configuration, thus we will proceed carefully. The inappropriate use of the Internet was also discussed.

Printing: there is a growing and pressing need for card-controlled printing, much like the copier machines. SUNYCard is still a year or two away, however, and the discussion ends on that note.

Bob reported that Ram Chugh told him the SUNY Faculty Senate is looking for nominations, specifically a "Library and IS" person. That body meets maybe three or four times a year. It was agreed that an AVP/IS would be the logical nominee.

Bob announced that Justin Sipher in Distributed Computing received the President's Award for Excellence in Academic Service.

Bob will be talking to Bill Fisher about the $9225 MTN subsidy from Telemedia.

Bruce reported that eight people from RPI visited Central Computing this week. They were here looking at Banner, and attended a Data Committee meeting.

Geri reported that because the Library is down two faculty lines, she and David Ossenkop will take on extra duties and work the Reference Desk. Geri said that the Library is discontinuing the duplicative card catalog for Crane. She also reported a problem of theft of equipment in the Library.

Next meeting date is to be determined.
