Distributed Computing/Telemedia Department Meeting

                     Minutes (3/30/95)

1. Presentation of a Distributed Computing/Telemedia WWW pages for internal
use. Bob presented some initial work that has been done to develop HyperText
Mark-up Language (HTML) documents for WWW use that can be view through a WWW
browser such as Mosaic or Netscape. It was suggest that we begin to focus
department time and resources on publishing HTML documents that we would use
internally and publishing HTML documents for "public" viewing.

Possibilities for internal use include:

- technical documentation (e.g., how to reset the LanRovers). - an internal
HELPDESK area with information we do not wanted distributed publicly.
- meeting minutes.
- an internal "newsletter" with information that we want to keep each other
  informed about.

Possibilities for public viewing might include:

- a personal homepage for each one of us that electronically introduces.
us to WWW browsers.
- a WWW-based HELPDESK with information, documentation, tips,
work-around solutions, etc. that we want customrs to have access to. - links to other WWW resources that may be valuable to our customers. - a public "newsletter" with information that we want to draw our
customer's attention to.

2. Bob asked that each member of the department publish their own WWW homepage
in order to become familiar with HTML documents and how to publish on the WWW. We will distribute our departmental QuickTake camera around the department so everyone can learn how to publish photos (using their own "mugs" on their own homepage as the first step), as well as graphics and text in their HTML documents.

3. What's most important for the department to accomplish?

- Acquire HTML publishing skills (NOTE: scheduling a HTML workshop) - publish departmental information and HELPDESK-based information for
internal and public viewing.
- Use Now Up-to-Date (v3.0), especially its meeting scheduling feature - refer to our mission statement when making plans and decisions about
departmental issues.
- develop a Hi-Tech/Hi-Touch meeting room in our small studio that would
facilitate group communications, new technologies, etc. (Jack is working on some of the costs.)
- talk to your customers and find out from them how we can help them
reach their goals and fulfill their mission.
