Interview with: Jim Stoltie, Dean
Scott LaVine, Assoc. Professor
Crane School of Music
Interview date: 2/14/97
Questions:
1. How satisfied you (and your school) are with technology support and
services?
* Responsiveness to problems in Crane is slow but improving since Romeyn's
arrival.
2. What services and support could be improved?
* Need to know what is being done with Mendoza's Duo/Dock.
* Printer in Paul Steinberg's lab still does not work and it is very
important that have that functioning. [NOTE: The printer is back on
the network and a new pinch roller has been ordered to correct
misfeeds.]
* LaserWriter 360 Select printer misfeeds. Located in Schuette 318A.
[NOTE from Scott 3/13: Romeyn says the paper tray is damaged. A new
one is close to $100.00. I think I might be able to jury rig a repair
to the slider mechanism. In the meantime, I have switched trays with
one of the other 360's to see if the tray is entirely the problem.]
* It would be good to control access to printing as it is done in Crumb
Library.
* There is too much pressure on Scott to provide tehcnology support in
Crane (setting up and fixing problems). Crane needs a student asst.
assigned to them in order to delegate tasks.
[NOTE from Scott 3/13: We have identified and are in the process of
working two students into the rotation (Stephen Johnson and Neil
Bryson). I will get a definite schedule and start assigning them
maintenance tasks in the lab as well as providing support especially
during the evenings.]
3. Is your division considering any new technology initiatives for the next
year?
* At least 23 faculty computers need to be replaced (Mac SE's, IIsi's,
IIcx) so that faculty can take advantage of basic network services.
This figure includes purchasing computers for 3-4 new faculty arriving
in the Fall.
* Add network faceplate in Bishop 101, 107, 119, 123; Snell ticket
office; Hosmer lobby/ticket office
4. What are your most important concerns and priorities for the next
year?
* SCAP-related items:
(a) SCAP software budget ($2000). Being able to keep software updated
and purchase some new items is important.
(b) Increase number of MIDI/computers in MIDI Lab from 16 to 20.
Remove six (6) older MIDI/computers from MIDI Lab and place in the
main part of the library for use by students who don't need MIDI
technology. The SE's in this area are in horrible shape. Most don't
work.
(c) Replace Crane Appleshare server.
(d) Multi-media presentation cart (computer/MIDI keyboard/projection)
A second cart would really be helpful.
* Other Crane needs:
(a) Replace/upgrade 23 faculty computers to meet minimum standard (16Mb
RAM, color monitors, CD-ROM, use of email/Netscape)
(b) Upgrade Now Up-To-Date and provide additional copies for all clerical
and administrative staff. Put calendar server on Crane Appleshare
server if it is replaced/upgraded. (10-pack)
(c) Provide five (5) student organizations with computers (IIsi's from
Crane faculty?)
(d) provide a computer for the "in-house" library in the Crane complex.
(Band, Orchestral, and Choral music libraries on the first floor)
