Network Services Team
Mission of the Network Services Team (NST):
To increase the effectiveness, productivity and creativity of students,
faculty, staff and administrators by:
- providing outstanding network services and support based upon
assessed customer requirements;
- supporting and promoting the College's technological competitiveness
in higher education;
- keeping the campus well-informed about our network services, outages
and work-around strategies, as well as relevant technological trends
and developments;
and by,
- collaborating with other campus departments and SUNY schools
to meet our goals and support the mission of the College.
Goals for Network Services Team (1995-96):
WWW host services
- files on WWW host can be searched/index (Mac servers via AppleSearch)
by 9/1/95
Email host services
- all VMS email users migrated to POP mail
Network host services
- file/print services for DOS/Windows supported at level comparable to Mac
users.

Act as Postmaster for email, Bitnet and Internet -ju
Develop and maintain BearFacts (CWIS) using gopher and WWW
Lead BearFacts Team meetings (with College Relations, Library, ISD)
Adds/moves/changes of the voice/video /Data/TV&RF networks.cc
Approve, forward or implement all changes, etc. requested on Telephone/Network Service Request Form -bb
Assist with seimic network -cc
Campus coorinator for SUNYSAT and ALSS users for local receive site facilities- cc
Check E-mail queues on all central hosts -dfb
check for bad voice/video/data network connections/taps/faceplates -cc
Check JNET on VAXes for proper/reliable operation -dfb
Check memory status on all central hosts to ensure reliable operation -dfb
Check PMDF on VAXes for proper/reliable operation -dfb
check RF amplifier performance i.e. depth of video/audio modulation,crosstalk and etc. -cc
Check system load on central hosts -dfb
Check TCP/IP (UCX) process on VAXes/Alpha to see that it's working -dfb
Clean and organize BDF, IDF, phone switchroom and premise wiring (remove unused lines, cross wire and etc.) -cc
Complete paperwork on network work-orders -gb
Complete work orders (list labor, hardware cost and parts for inventory restocking
Completing oral and written vendor surveys/questionnaires -network
Conduct switch and AUDIX traffic analysis -bb
Coordinate DECnet addressing scheme -js
Coordinate TCP/IP addressing -js
Delegate work on network work-order to students -gb
Design and construct facilities for voice/video/data/audio/satellite, tv-rf -cc
Design, installation and maintenance of TVRO(TV receive only), SMATV, head-end (receives, antennas, modulators, demodulators, descrambers, etc., equipment -cc
Develop and lead campus network planning/strategies -rj
Establish and write procedures for the seismic network -jm
Evaluate/report any possible network problems in student computing centers -ju
Inspect phones, TV/RF faceplates for damage and check phones for dial tone and TV taps, trunk/building ampilifiers for correct signal levels in all residence halls during summer break. -cc
Install, upgrade, manage PATHWorks for DOS/Windows client software
Install, upgrade, manage PATHWorks for Macintosh client software
Install/maintain/upgrade TCP/IP services on Unix hosts -dfb
Interface with SUNY central for remote access(i.e. T1 lines, wellfleet, csu/dsu and etc.) -cc

Maintain inventory of voice/data/video network equipment/parts for expansion and repairs -cc

Set-up Chipcom hub fiber ethernet channel, ports, bridges and etc.-cc
Set-up of telephone Modem's for remote access-cc
Set-up servers (DEC 200,300,700) for terminals and printers -cc
Setup terminals and printers for campus class registration and setup TV channel to carry closed course listing -cc
SMATV programming contracts (e.g. CNN,WTBS,USA,BET,MTV,Headline News,WWOR,ME/U,ESPN,ESPN II,Fox,SCI-FI, Galavision, C-Span, and local off-air stations-cc
Support all campus AppleShare servers -js
Support campus Gopher servers (hosts) -js
Troubleshooting equipment problems and calling rmats when necessary-kt
USER account maintenance (add, delete, change password) VB and Unix hosts -dfb
Work with and coordinate joint telecommunications ventures with SUNY CANTON-bb

Write/Update documentation on accessing & utilizing other campus
